Hello All,
I thought I would share how I make my trunnion caps. In Picture one you can see the die I made to press trunnion caps for 1" trunnions. The top part of the die slides up and down on the shafts. notice the back stop. this way the caps are pressed straight.

In photo 2 you can see the 10 gauge trunnion strap blank, ready to be pressed.

In photo 3 you can see the pressed trunnion cap. When pressing them it is best to lube the caps with a little grease.

And in photo 4 you can see the pressed cap.

I have die's for 3/4", 1", 2", and I have one almost done for 1.5" trunnion caps. I've found this to be a quick way to make trunnion caps. If any body want's any let me know.

Good show!  Simple design means lots of thought and planning.  If I remember right 10 or 11 ga is about 1/8" thick.

What flavor of steel did you use for the dies?  Heat treated?  (Questions relating to tooling life.)  How much pressure do you need (how big an hydraulic cylinder do you use).  Maybe I should fix my 50t press!

Hi, The material is just mild steel. I have noticed the corners of the die rounding a bit but it hasn't affected the quality of the caps. Thats when I started greasing the caps. I don't know how big of a press it would take? The press at work is shop built and is probably 30-40 ton. Over kill for sure:O) I've pressed the 3/4" and one 1" caps in a 6" vice before, however.

What would be wrong with using the actual trunnion for a die?

Would an ordinary 6 in. bench vise exert enough pressure to form those caps?
