My new DW M14/High Standard Sentinel .357
« on: February 04, 2005, 06:38:01 PM »
I found this little .357 in a pawn shop in Melbourne, FL.  The owner had it in the back,  He had no idea what it was and I got it for $160.
Back in the early '70s, High Standard sold the 4" fixed-sight DW .357 under their name.  It's the same as the regular DW M14 that's long out of production.  Except for the fixed sights, it's just like the current .357.
My new gun is in excellent shape.  There's a very small amount of blue wear at the muzzle and at the crane hinge.  Otherwise, it's perfect.  The bore and chambers look factory-new.  There was no barrel wrench.  Big deal.
Other than the fact that it felt like it had been lubricated with taffy (the original lube and 30 years of dust) it functioned fine.
I blasted out all the old crud with brake cleaner and lubed it with Snake Oil.  I'll have to do some action work, but that's no problem.
I used to shoot a similar gun with adjustable sights and a 10" barrel in IHMSA competition 25 years ago.  I was impressed with the accuracy and strength.
Gotta load some ammo tomorrow and get to the range!

Nope.

There was a sign in the pawnshop:

"We cheated the last guy so we could pass the savings on to you"!!
