I don't own a 586 or 686 but have a friend who has a pair of them. He has put over 10,000 rounds through them with no problems. The only 357 mag smiths I own are N frames. It would appear the L frames are just as strong in this caliber. Regards, Byron

just recently purchased a 686 2.5" to give to my daughter for her 22nd  B.D. in May, so I'm looking for target loads and quite happy with  3.2 grs. of 231 and 148 gr. wad cutters. This is the first Smith & Wesson I've bought and actually had a chance to fire. Plenty happy with the groups at 10 yrds.and target loads and recoil in a 35 oz. gun. Only change I have made is the the Hogue Bantam rubber grip for better conceal. May have to wait till the girl is 23.

..........The 686 will take a lot of shooting.......not quite as much as a 27/28 but a lot.....I would get some grips/stocks that fit your hand well....I like the Hogues and get a smoothing job on the action.......not to lighten the hammer fall but smooth the pull........I prefer a fixed -type trigger stop for a crisp single action feel and on SOME guns you might have to smooth the forcing cone and extractor star-cly area for good seating and better accuracy....just on a gun by gun basis..they don't have many poorly finished ones but some do need a little TLC......If the factory smith sight doesn't give you a good sight picture then try a Ellison type replacement from Brownellls for a larger smooth flat rear face to clean up the sight picture........personal preference.......and a patridge type front sight blade to let you zero that heavy bullet and keep the rear sight lower in the frame for added protection.......enjoy the process....good luck and good shooting!!
