.17m2 accuarcy not good past 50 yards????

I have a friend who converted his 10/22 to .17m2.  He says the accuracy "sucks" after 50 yards.  Have any of you had the same experience?

I am thinking of buying an m2 rifle.  I was thinking of a Marlin, although I am a big Savage fan.  Could any of you tell me if you have had any experience with the Savage or Marlin, and how it compares in accuracy to the NEF/H&R?

Don't have the Savage or Marlin 17M2, have an NEF Sportster, shoots 1" at 100yds. Check out the RFC 17M2 forum, lots of happy Savage and Marlin owners there...

Mine does excellent at 50 yrds It did good at 100 but I did have a wind that day I suspect was a big problem. I hope to get it back to the range tommorw, but weather my not let me.

Did get to the range this after noon but didn't go past 50 yrs. Shot the 17 HMR for the first time cleaning after every shot takes time but it lets me get the scope deled in. Then I took up the 17m2 and rembered why I really didn't take it past 50 the scope on it is a 4x32 simons while a good squirrel scope with my old eyes ain't much good past 50. but back to how the 17m2 did was a hair less that a 1/4 in. used hornaday v-max. The 17HMR also did 1/4 at 50 also using Hornady 17 gr v-max. I think when the better half is not looking I am going to step up in scopes.

That's good information.... well, not about the eyes, but the reason for the 50yd "inaccuracy", and some info on a scope NOT to consider. :roll:

Now, because my eyes are probably older and worse than yours, what scope are we going to get?

Any suggestions, anyone?

I've got a 4.5-14x40 scope on my 17M2 and a 6-18x40 on my 17hmr Sportster. My Marlin 17hmrs both have 6-20x40 scopes on em. How much money do you want to spend on the scope? I can give you some suggestions if I know how much and what you want to do with it, target/paper....hunting, both??

It doesn't have to be cheap, but NOT a Leupold.  I have not been impressed enough with the increase in quality of a Leupold to pay that kind of money.  I might consider a Burris.  It's going to have to be of some decent quality because of my eyes.  I don't know how much they cost, but I'll bet your 6-18x40 wasn't cheap.  What brand is that one?  I need to put a powerful scope on my mach 2 because I can't get anywhere near the ground squirrels I have to clean out.  I'd say about 75 yards would be about right, but they are small and blend in with the ground and brush so they are hard to see.

I would highly recommend you check out The Optic Zone, one of our sponsors, Jon has some great buys on great optics. If you're interested in Illuminated dot reticles, the Muellers are some pretty nice scopes for the money. If you'd like a standard reticle, the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 or Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40 for about the same money are both excellent scopes. Do a little browsing at the web site and give Jon a call or email him, he's extremely knowledgeable about his products and can tell you anything you need to know to help you decide what's best for ya. The scopes that I have on my Hmrs and Mach2 are older scopes that are no longer built, Bushnell Scopechiefs and a Simmons ATV so that doesn't help ya much. I also have a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40 on my CZ452 American 17hmr, they are trully an excellent scope in every way, and a step up from the Buckmaster and Elite 3200, but a little more money at $329 from TOZ.
