Season Report.......
« on: February 05, 2003, 12:07:17 PM »
Ok everyone, please sound off as to what kind of season you're having or have had. Was it what you were expecting?? Better or worse than last year?

Just wrapped up our duck season last week here in Tn. Season wasn't too bad. We had a great early duck season but things kind of tapered off later in the year. We never got the weather that we depend on to push the birds down from the North. Goose season was outstanding. It seemed that almost every body of water had geese. Early goose season was quite good with liberal bag limits and a large portion of residential geese being taken.

Come on now. Let's hear how things are going...

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES

We had a decent waterfowl season here in minnesota.  In my part of the state at least, elsewhere, hunters talked of numbers being farther down than even our DNR tried to prepare us for.  When hunting with my buddies, we dont try to limit out, we usually quit after 3-4 ducks each.  However we did shoot our limit a few times.  Me and my buddy Terry are guides and our clients shot just shy of 300 geese.  If they were better shots they would have had a lot more....But anyway, numbers called in were over a thousand, better than last year, however this year we started using Foiles Strait Meat goose calls, his short reeds and flutes.  Excellent calls!

We had a good season for geese, ho hum for ducks.  Geese have really rebounded in the last couple of years here in Virginia.  Also had a chance to compare 12 ga 3" 1-1/4 oz HeviShot #4 to 12 ga 3.5" 1-9/16 oz Steel BBB and both were effective.  I guess the choice is expensive ammo or expensive shotgun, either will get the job done.  Didn't take any really long shots, however, and this is were HeviShot may shine.

I had one of the best seasons I have ever had. But I have a theory, When the waterfowling is poor in the west it is very good in the east because some of the birds come this way. When the hunting is great out west as 2 or 3 years ago the hunting in the east is margional. Again this year it proved true. Great early Goose and dabbler shooting followed by steller diver hunting late season. In fact the only issue I had with the season is my poor shooting during the late season.
Although I hear from friends in west Tenn. that the season was poor for them.
Hope all have a good next season.

Here in western Colorado we had a poor season, the weather was beautiful all of December and January, rode the bike as many days as duck hunted!! When the deep freeze hit the Dakotas, about 2 weeks ago the geese came in heavy( to late the season closed ). Played golf yesterday at a local course where the river runs next to the course, from 4-5 in the after noon we saw probably 1000 geese moving west down the river way, breath taking and LOUD!!Hopfully we'll get some winter a little earlier next year and have a great season!!

here in northeastern ilinois, it was pretty good on ducks, but the geese were horrible, i never even got a goose this season :x  , i blew the one chance i had on them, it was a very long story, my grandfather got a couple though(long story), all but one was shot when i wasnt there, i guess i just wasnt out in the field when i should have been, we hunt on a cooling lake and it seems that the geese will stay on the little ponds all over and the ducks come to the big "hot tub" but we did better on ducks thia year than last year

I had a good season in NC KS.  They had lots of water in E. KS so they probably did fine also.  The biggest marsh in the state was dry however, so in that part of the state (West Central)it was terrible.  I think it drove a lot of hunters to NC KS were I hunt.  There was lots more competetion.  Go-Devils were a dime a dozen.  I used to be the only guy out there with one.  Now I hardly ever use mine.  I am trying to stay away from those guys.  They'll sky bust everything that comes anywhere near them and screw it up for everyone else.  One of the 2 days i took it out I set there and watched 5 guys in a boat with a Go-Devil standing up in there boat blind.  They would all 5 cut loose on anything the flew within 60 yards or maybe more?  Made me want to vomit.

I shot more ducks than ever, but I got out more than ever.  Made about 40 trips to the field.
