1895 Nagant Range Report

Took my 1895 Nagant to range today. Brought along Fiocchi 98 gr. FMJ & Federal .32 Mag. 85 gr. JHP. At 25 yards the 85 gr. JHP would not group worth a darn. The Fiocchi however turned in a best 7 shot group of 3 1/2". The weather was cloudy & in the mid-fortys. Group size may have been effected by shaking hands but I was having a fine day as opposed to a guy with a new Glock 23 (.40 S&W cal). His target was mainly untouched and he was not the only one (at least he put some holes in the target). An urban youngster was at the range with, get this, a Desert Eagle chambered in .50 AE & 20 rounds (at $1.00 a round). He could only take 14 shots and at 25 yards his target was absolutely clean :) . Any one in front of 'deadeye' should be relatively safe.

I have a couple nagants, they are nice revolvers. I shoot 32-20 brass sized in  Lee/Midway dies, cast bullets and a light charge of Unique. The guns both shoot to point of aim at the 15 or so yards I shoot at. More than adequate for popping a bunny at that distance.

Is factory ammo available for the 7.65 Nagant revolver?

I used to have a 1938 vintage rebuilt Nagant revolver, used the very expensive Fiochi ammo at the time, and later traded the gun off due to the heavy trigger pull.  It shot ok, sometimes the groups were good, other times not so much.

Anyways, I saw some nice pieces at the gunshow yesterday and might pickup another one again,  with the factory ammo, what can a person expect, what are the choices and availability?  I don't have time to handload for that caliber at this time, and will only shoot it 2-3 times a year.

As I inderstand it, Fiocchi only turns out a batch
of 7.62x38 every 3 to 5 years. It is difficult to find and
quite expensive. HotShot keeps promising to load it
but none so far. Every now and then an importer
will bring in a pallet or 2 . If you plan on shooting
it much, you should tool up to load your own.

Reloading using .32-20 brass is easy, and at the typically low pressures of this round, the brass will last forever.
Some folks like using the .32SW Long or the .32 H&R magnum - but I prefer to use brass I can reuse.  It's cheaper too.
Midway has the dies.

We will soon be offering the loaded ammunition. We do have in stock correct brass if anyone needs it. It is correct headstamp and it is the correct length to make the gas seal unlike the .32-20

How many rubles er.... bucks per box (of 50?)? Bullet weights, cast, FMJ, or HP? Inquiring cossacks want to know. :-D  :-D  :-D

Yep, be very interesting to see what kind of accuracy we can get with the 'proper' style of reloads!   :-)

Got one batch of reloads too light once - averaging about 475 to 500 FPS!  We could see the bullets in flight!
Running about 700FPS now, but probably losing some grunt from the gas leakage between cylinder and barrel.
The lead bullets we use are great for the steel swinger targets - no denting and a healthy whack.  Less damaging than the hotter .22LR loads!   8)

It will be a little while before they are ready, cost is not yet set but it will be about 15.00-20.00 per box (50) hopefully we'll be able to cut the cost.
Initially we will offer the 93g SP, 93g Wadcutter, and 85g SP.
I plan to develop from 60g up to 100g but that is all in the future. Right now I'm awaiting some tooling, the guns are in; several standard models ranging from excellent condition to pretty poor and a few single action models that might make their way into my private collection.

Anyone know whether Reed's brass is proper lenght or whether it is short like Graf brass (1.47" or 60 thousandths short).
