It was not I.

That's quite some project.

Great link.

It's giving me some dangerous ideas for my next project.

I would have done two things differently.  I would turned the cascabel diameter first,  then  have drilled the bore.  When he sets  up the steady rest to do the bore he is going to get a burnished spot on the turned barrel where the fingers ride.

I would have also milled the trunnion recesses before turning operations.

But that's just how I would have done it.

Drilling the bore and rub marks
« Reply #4 on: February 01, 2005, 06:28:57 PM »
You're right, even bronze finger tips will mark the surface, but the diameter that will ride the steady fingers is not the finish diameter.  I will resupport the barrel between centers to finish the muzzle rings and that will remove the rub marks from the steady fingers.  Still working on new fingers for the steady.

George, welcome glad to have you here.

I see you are a step ahead thinking about that burnished spot.   I have run on to them working on gun barrels and they gan play the devil in polishing.

I got to thinking and It dawned on me just now why you did it this way.  Size!  You didn't have a steady rest big enough for the stock.  So you turned it down a bit  to accomodate the smaller size steady rest you are making.

Which made me think even more.   The last tube I drilled I had access to a larger lathe.  I couldn't do it on my lathe.   The next tube I build I will have to do it the same way you are or find a larger lathe to use.

Lathe to drill in
« Reply #6 on: February 01, 2005, 08:16:25 PM »
I actually have a 17 x 54 lathe that I will use for drilling.  It is in worse condition than the Logan so I usually use it only when the work is too large for the smaller machine.  My immediate limitation is the 24" long drill is at Lassen College so I can only drill to about 18" depth unless I can get them to send me the drill (maybe.)

I made a series of extensions for my 1 inch drill. It starts at just under 18 inches.  Ad the extensions for more depth.  I have drilled as much as 30 inches with it.

I HAVE ASKED THE STAFF ...
« Reply #8 on: February 27, 2005, 03:45:53 PM »
at Lassen College Gunsmithing to send me the 24" drill since we aren't going to have a cannon class this summer.  So once I get it, I will finish drilling the bore.  It's drilled to the depth of a standard 1" taper drill now so progress has halted pending receipt of the long drill.

I finally finished drilling the bore and have added a couple of posts to the thread at the link at the top of this thread (the Chaski Gunsmithing forum.)  Each post has links to a few more pictures.

That sure is a beautiful looking gun tube.   :)  Keep the pics coming as work progresses. What grade of steel is it and is there any chance of us being able to get a drawing with dimensions?

A drawing file in .dwg format can be emailed or a paper drawing set can be snail mailed.  Steel is surplus of unknown alloy.

Made the trunnions tonight.  They're just sitting there right now but a much more finished look with them.

I can send my order (with deposit of course) where?

Amazing attention to detail George! Nice work! Truly a piece of art! I've got a copy of the 24 pounder that was in popular mechanics? and have been thinking of one that was scaled up a bit from theirs a bit. I really like the ring in the cascadable. I'll have to add that to one of my barrels someday. Do you plan on building the carriage also? Again, Great Job!!!

Yes, I am planning to build a naval carriage for it also (wheels are much easier than a field piece.)  My plans are in an AutoCAD file and I can easily scale them to any size, if you would like a set scaled to whatever size you are interested in.

Regarding making one for hire, this one probably has at least 100 hours in it with the carriage yet to go.  What's my time worth to you?  (-:  Actually I still have a full time job and am not really interested in making a business out of this.  But thanks for the compliments.
