my gran dad gave me some bullets and they are .22s but are about half the size of a .22 short and the shell casing is brass and the bulet is black and round. also on the botom of it there is a acorn. any idea what it is??

They're called a BB Cap. The round ball is propelled by the priming mix only as there is no powder used in that loading. Very quiet shooting.

You have 22 BB caps.
These use a round 22 cal ball atop a very short cartridge containing only priming mix. The only corporation I know of that still makes them is RWS/Dynamit Nobel and they are not really cheap (around $10 per 100)
These are NOT the same as 22 CB's
22 CB (the CB stands for conical ball) come in either short or long versions with a 29 gr bullet and are MUCH more powerful than the 22 BB Cap. Both the 22 CB Long and Short contain powder in addition to the priming mix. Both CB's average around 725 fps out of 24 inch rifle barrels.
If you want a cartridge of around the same power as the BBcap for much less cost, check out Aguila's 22 Colibri & Super Colibri loads. They both use the 22 long case with a 29 gr bullet propelled by priming mix only.
The difference between the two is that the Colibri uses less priming mix than the super. The Colibri is good for about 375 fps, and the Super is good for 500 fps. Only the Super is safe for use in both rifles and pistols.
The regular Colibri is for pistols only; due to the extremely low velocity it will not push the projectile out of all rifle barrels.

Many, many years ago, I killed a 'chuck with an old Stevens single shot loaded with a BB cap. The rifle had headspace problems and would split open any regular 22 cartridge fired in it but BB caps worked fine. Killed the chuck at somewhere around 20 yds and cracked him right in the head. So, obviously these are serious rounds and although quiet they can be lethal.
