first for season. i've been at it a little while. but three whitetails in one season is very good for me. only reason i got eight days in the woods this season was because my youngest son was injured in the middle of wrestling season, allowing him some time to hunt - and me extra time because he wasn't in weekend tournaments. eight days, three deer, not bad.
as much as i love deer hunting, i'd rather watch him wrestle. he's got one more year. if all goes well - for him - i'll get maybe five days in the woods during gun season next year.
so, that's three deer this season for the handis. i had killed a couple years back with previous handis. most of my hunting over the years has been done with bolt guns and the occasional lever action.
but i grew up with an h&h 16-gauge full choke shotgun that was my first gun purchase when i was 11 years old - 42 years ago. bought it with lawn mowing money. killed tons of doves. even got a double once, giving me 13 doves with 12 shots, my best day ever. so a handi is way, way, natural to point for me. next best pointer is a winchester model 12.
this season is just kind of a re-discovery of how naturally the little sticks point for me. next is some good glass, although there is perverse pleasure in successful hunting with a $200 gun, $24 trashco scope, over-the-counter ammo, and a 99-year-old chambering. but man, that little rifle has earned a good piece of glass.
