Lyman or Williams receiver sights for m94

Choosing a receiver/peep sight for a pre-AE model 94.

What would you all prefer for simple, rugged, all around, use for 30-30 to replace the buckhorn sights? Want to use the receiver sight screws in place on the left side of the receiver and not have to drill and tap any new holes. Would like to try some longer range sillouhet shooting so having some extra elevation adjustment might be good too.

I have the impression that both these makes and models have been used with m94s for about as long as the m94 has been around--how close are they to the receiver sights of the previous turn of the century? --Thanks

I think that Lyman still makes a steel one so I would say that would be closer to period correct but in all honesty I dont think reciever sights came into common use till the 20th century. I believe theyre not allowed in cowboy action games for this reason. They used tang sights I believe.

if you want period correct get a marble or lyman folding tang. Nice thing about them is you can still use your buckhorn for up close and fold up the tang for long distance.

Are you going to use the rifle for hunting or target?  They should be set up differently for either use.  For hunting, either the Williams or the Lyman would be really helpful, especially if you have some miles on your eyes.  If you are shooting target, then you will want a longer barreled rifle, and the tang sight will give you even more sight rafius.  BTW, many of the oldtime shooters used a sight mounted on the top of the butt of the stock, to get the maximum sight radius, and shot lying on their backs, with the gun in the armpit.
I have the Williams mounted on my guns and am very well pleased with them.

Hunting and target. I see the advantage of longer barrels for target, but I shoot what I have. Don't want to install tang sights if it means drilling and tapping the tang, and like you say, I think the receiver sights would be more durable and less trouble for hunting. I had planned on getting one of the One Hole peeps that mount on the original buckhorns but that sight radius is about 6" shorter than with a receiver sight, and having the peep that far from the eye may defeat the purpose of the peep anyway--I don't know and haven't tried.

As for period correct, I guess I think of the period for the m94 as the early 20th C. even though it was around for the last few years of the 19th has a lot in common with the main 19th C. lever rifles like model 73s and Henrys . I've seen early 20th C. photos of rangers with receiver sights on winchester and marlin lever guns and I'm curious how long the Williams and Lyman brand receiver sights go back.

Heck, it looks like the m94 is period correct in the early 21st C. too    so maybe I shouldn't care if it doesn't look like last century's rifles. Slim, lightweight, quick to shoulder and shoot, reliable, shoots some fine cartridges--the origial assault rifle...anybody seeing an swat94 with black composite stock and forearm, pic-rail with red-dot scope and an underslung mounted flash light?

I put reciever sights on have. Some wear scopes part time but they all have a set. A bigger advantage IMO than the increased sight radius is a reciever sight puts your eye in the rght place every time because of how close it is. Its not the same with a peep way up on the barrel.
I think you'll be plenty happy with either a Williams or Lyman.

I've used both Lyman and Williams peep sights on my Marlin 336.

I prefer the Williams FP 94 Firesight  set up.  I believe that it is more field-ready and durable than the Lyman 66.  Also, the replacement of the front bead with the smaller profile red firesight seems to be more helpful in aquireing a sight picture - just my two cents worth.

BTW- both should thread into the holes tapped into the side of the receiver.

Good luck,
Matt
