Buy .41 Mag.?
« on: January 27, 2005, 12:46:43 PM »
Have a chance to buy a DW .41 Mag, SS, excellent condition, with some ammo.    $400  Indicates he might listen to offers.  I know T/C's but DW's are new to me.  I do love the .41 round in my Contender. Does the price sound about right"  Is there any particular thing I should look out for?  Thanks for the advice.

I have never actually seen a 41 Mag DW in the flesh so I have the impression they are not overly common.

Price sounds about right given the revolver really is "excellent".  Particularly if you specifically want a 41 Mag.  Judge the condition by the same criteria as any revolver with the addition of checking to see the shroud retention ring at the muzzle is not frozen in place.

for stainless. Hopefully it comes with a decent length barrel, 6"-8", depending on shroud weight. Compared to the T/C, you will be a happy camper. Best grips would be a Pachmayer Presentation, they came in 2 sizes, I think.

Went to look at that .41 DW today.  What was described as excellent conditon was quite a ways from it.  I'd give it a good, but to be generous it might be very good.  There was some rust on the rear sight, some discoloration on the trigger guard that looked like removed rust and there were some burnish marks against the grain of the finish that looked like someone had taken a fine abrasive of some kind to it.  All in all, I didn.t think it worth the $400 he was asking for it.  The bore was very good, but there was what I felt was a little to much slack in the cyclinder.  Trigger was fantastic!    Probably the next guy to see it will buy it, but I tend to be cautious.  Gave him my phone number and left an offer.  Another wild goose chase.  Ain't it fun though?

Honorable Mayor,

It sounds like you have a keen eye and made the right decision.  The gun is probably not hurt, just neglected, but I would not pay $400 for it in that condition either.  Who knows, you may get a good deal on it yet.  Sometimes a wild goose actually come home to roost.

Look at the following post for additional things to look for:
