I recently purchased a pepper laminate stock from Boyds for a Contender carbine and can use some refinishing opinions/advice. My preferred method of finish has been hand-rubbed Tru-Oil for a deep, rich finish on either maple and walnut. But I used Tru-Oil on a pepper laminate stock for a custom 10-22 and am not that crazy about the "honey" color from the Tru-Oil. My question is what is the preferred finish (and application method) for a laminate stock? Thanks!

I've never tried it myself, but I've heard of guys using marine varnish. It can give the stock a high gloss, but is reportedly very durable. Not sure how it would affect stock color, though.

you can buy a urethane finish at any hardware store that is clear. I used it to repair a bad spot on a Remington LSS stock.

Laminate I just finished, 3 coats of Shellac, last with a slight tint of walnut and hand rubbed with "OO" steel wool, 800 wet, then a buffing.

I have been thinking about a Boyds stock for my Encore. Did they send any instructions or tips on how to finish the stock? I thought I saw something about "how to" on the web site, but I can't remember. Maybe give them a call or an e-mail.

Stan If your looking for a Boyds laminated stock set for your Encore checkout E.A. Brown co. Thats where I bought the Pepper Laminated set for my Encore. The fit was fantastic, and looked great with its low sheen satin finish. Just put it on your gun and its ready to go. Looks like the have a special going on $109 for the set.

I went to EABCo. and checked out the Pepper Laminate set I had been thinking about for while. I ordered a set the next day but they replied back saying they are on back order

They are supposed to ship me a set when they come in. Thanks for turning me on to the special. I figured it's worth the extra when you figure time and materials. Wood working and painting type work is not my cup of tea.

As far as Boyd's goes I went to their site and all I could find was finishing supplies for sell. No directions but I'm sure a phone call would get you some advice.

I ordered a Boyd's pepper laminate stock, tapered fore end and a bull barrel fore end for my T/C Contender carbine. The stock and tapered fore end arrived right away but it took another month to recieve the bull fore end.

All I've done to finish the stocks is sand them with 220 grit sand paper on a palm sander till I got the laminate lines the way I wanted. Then I clean the stocks with a cloth that did not leave lint on the wood. I then sprayed 5 coats of matte clear laquer (spray can that I bought at Home Depot) letting each coat dry completely before applying the next coat.

Why in the world would you put a laquer finish on a gunstock, the first time you have the stock in wet weather the finish will turn a white milky color, laquer and poly varnish finishes are for furniture and kitchen cabinets.
A gunstock requires an oil finish with hand rubbing the finish between coats so as to create as little biuld up of finish on the stock as possible, the finish is suppose to be in the wood not laying on top in multiple coats. Any gunstock that is finished with a laqueror poly varnish in multiple coats will get scratched and dinged and will have to be completly stripped and refinished to repair the scratch, an oil finish is in the wood and can be easily repaired with some steel wool and a little of the oil finish.

My stockset for my contender came finished from Boyd's.Can you use spray paint well,If you can try some Minwax spray polyurethane.I have used it a few times on gunstocks and had good results.You can get it in gloss and satin finishes.You can buy it at a local wallmart or hardware store.You can put as many coats on your stockset as you want,if you get a run in the finish don't stress.Wait till it dries and lightly sand the area with 0000 steel wool and recoat untill you get the desired finish.
