Strange Sight in Question.
« on: January 25, 2005, 03:36:23 PM »
Hi all this is my first post here but iv been reading and absorbing all the great information everyone here has provided.  Now to my question......I have a browning A-Bolt in 7mm rem mag with a pentex lightseeker scope.  When i first got it i boresighted it and sighted in at the 25 yard range thats close to my house and i ended up shooting dead center about an inch high.  Recently however i was able to shoot at 100 yards and my bullets are still hitting dead center but are about between 12-13 inches high.  What could be the reason for this and how can i fix it.
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Hmm, this is so elementary I'm gonna assume you're just testing us. How do you fix it? You adjust that top turret on the scope to drop it by the amount you want it to be high at 100 yards. Dunno if your adjustments are 1/4" value or not but will assume so. IF that's the case then turn it toward the direction the arrow says is DOWN by 40 clicks. Viola you're 2-3" high at 100 yards. Shoot again to verify. If you want find tune it to some other height or dead center if that makes you happy.

When shooting at 25 yards with any centerfire rifle you'll generally need to be about 2" low to be on at 100 yards. Yeah it varies based on the ballistics of the round but that's generally close.

Sorry, forgot to say that the scope adjustment is bottomed out allready. I was able to get it down about 5 inches and it wont' go down anymore.  I wish it were that easy.
Thanks,
Nick

I knew it had to be a trick question.  :)

Reason? Wal that's kinda hard to figure out sitting here and the rifle there. Lots of possibilities but when all is said and done the proper fix is to put some Burris Signature rings on it and use the offset inserts to adjust it to more or less center the scope in it's adjustment range. You'll likely need to use the plus and minus 20 offset inserts in one right or the other. I always look at the instructions to be sure but I think it's the front that you put the fat side down in your case and thin side up. Vice versa for rear ring.

I had one awhile back shooting that far off at 25 yards. I had to put the 20s in both rings to fix it. Yeah it's gone now. Just didn't feel like keeping one that far off. But 12" at 100 yards is easily fixed with the Burris Signature rings and offset inserts.

Are you sure you have the right bases on the action?  With the proper bases and rings and a Pentax scope you should not be having these problems.  Check everything out.

Zach, ya might be amazed just how many languages this old fat boy speaks.   I've always said I am versatile, agile, mobile and hostile. Of course these days I'm neither agile nor mobile for the most part.

AHHHH, c'est ne parlouz vous francais GB. "Viola" was a common ladies name some time back, "Voila" is more likely what GB meant to say.

I concur with Donaldo. The few times someone thought they needed to shim, I took a look and wound up finding a problem with their base/mount job.

Safe shooting.

Well i bought the gun from a gun show with the bases allready instaled.  The rings were thrown in and were probably the cheapest ones the guy could find so im thinking now that they are the culprit.  Thanks for the advise i may have to pick up those burris rings.  Do yall know where i could get them the cheapest as im a college student with a limited budget at the moment.
Thanks,
Nick

Scope bases and rings

Midway USA has a pretty good collection of scope bases and rings. I would recommend getting a new scope base and rings. The Leopuld bases and rings are reasonably priced and will serve you well.

Are the rings the type that can be switched front to rear and vice versa? If so try that first.

I have never found a need for the offset insert type rings. A shim under the base has always worked well for me. It is practically standard procedure with Mausers, due to the differing reciever dimensions. Lapping the rings will protect the scope.
