Monson DW 744 question
« on: January 25, 2005, 07:20:37 AM »
I have a chance at buying a DW 744 from a friend.  It was from a special run of 500 according to him and comes with a presentation case.  The gun has a matte stainless finish called Dove grey.  It is a beautiful gun.

My concern is that if I wanted more barrels and shrounds would I be able to get them in that finish?  Would it have collector value?  I want to use this gun for hunting and would pass on it if it was a collectible piece.

It appears the new DW sight is fairly vague with little information on it.

Also, I saw reference to a Hunter kit on another post.  Do DW still make that option available?  I would want it for the 744 and not a supermag model.

Thanks..Russ

I don't recall if DW ever offered  Dove Gray as a custom finish or not.

As far as getting extra barrels, you can use the regular ones even if they don't match exactly the custom finish on the gun.  Your target will never know the difference.  I hope the DW site does get updated as they promise, about the revolver accessories, parts, pacakages, and guns available.  They claim everything they used to offer is still available.  They did offer hunter packages in all their guns as far as I know.  I it usually conssted of a 8" barrel with a factory scope mount.  I have a 6" 44 mag "hunting package" barrel with no front sight slot and a factory installed scope mount.  That is the hunting package I use with the 44 on a Monson made gun.  It is so accurate it is spooky.  The first time i sighted it in, although I could not understand why, I thought I was missing the target with subsequent shots because there was only one hole in the bulleye of the target.  I finally noticed the hole was getting a little bigger and I did finally slightly cloverleaf one shot.  I highly recommend the DW hunting packages.

It has been my experience, that when a "presentation" type collectible of any make  is fired to any degree, the "collectible" value of it diminishes quickly.  If you want to use it, I would not pay any more for the "presentation" gun than you would pay for a regular one, because if you use it a lot, that is probably all it will ever be worth.

Just my 2 pesos.

I do seem to remember the "dove gray" finish option. This was around the time when the "Monson" version of the company went "bust". I have never seen one, or any explanation of what type of finish it was.

Russ,
You can email me a pic at mgsdrs@yahoo.com.  That price is about half of what I have seen the presentation models go for.  You can get a regular model cheaper, but the those presentation models sure look nice.  Of course the old saying goes, something is only worth as much as someone will give you for it.

I look forward to seeing the gun,

BY the way...I actually got a call back from DW because I wanted a price on a new 744-vh6.  I was told the gun is $849.00!  Is that right??

I had inquired 1 or 2 months ago about one I saw on the Gunbroker site and Mr. Serva emailed me a price of $585.00

When I questioned the girl from DW about that I was told the gun on Gunbroker was probably used...but I dont beleive it was.  She also said that DW doesnt make a "Hunter" version any more, but I could swear I saw on another post that someone had just ordered one.   This type of conflicting information is worrisome to me!

Does anyone know what the real world price on a 744-VHR goes for?

Thanks..Russ

Russ,
I have been hunting (no luck, all I got was cold and wet), so I have just replied to your emails.  DW does sell display models on Gunbroker with new factory warantees, but the guns are sold at reduced prices.  You got the info straight from the horses mouth, so I would just look for a good used 744 on the auction sites for under $350.
