Need a new barrel
« on: January 25, 2005, 03:14:44 AM »
I have a 722 Rem. in 222 with a bad barrel that I need to rebarrel. I have a 243 barrel for a 700 Rem. that I would like to use. Does anyone know if it will fit the 722 or will I have to go to something else? Will the 22-250 or the 243 work with my bolt if I have to buy a new barrel?

Thank!!!!!!!!
John

The barrel will fit but is a different contour most likely. The 722s have 24" barrel length, most 700s of recent manufacture have 22" barrel length. The bolt face is different between the 222 family of cartridges and the larger  22-250, 243, 308 family. The bolt face can be opened up for the larger case, but ruins any collectors value and would be expensive. A different extractor would have to be fitted also.

Should have bought a Savage, then you could just change out the bolt head.  :D

I just had a Rem ADL .222 rebarreled by ER Shaw. It came from a pawn shop with rust in the barrel but it was cheap. It would only do about 1.5" at 100 for 5 shots. I had to sand out the barrel channel to fit the varmint style Shaw barrel. I put the gun together, mounted the scope and fired it for the fitst time this past weekend.

After firing 17 shots, following the Shaw recommended break it and getting the scope sort ot lined up with the barrel I fired the last 3 shots at the 100 yard target and they went into 1/2". This is with no bedding or load development. It was only 3 shots but this is a great beginning.

Based on one experience, I recommend ER Shaw.
