Some Clarification Please
« on: January 20, 2005, 06:57:38 AM »
I would like to have a little clarification on this up-coming PD shoot,if possible. I was under the impression,in the beginning of all of this...that this was going to be more of a Social Gathering...with some PD shooting taking place...but...after reading all of the various threads, equipment list, ammo amount requirements one should bring, amount of people that can be there...ie...family members...so-on...I am begining to see this turn into more hard-core PD HUNT with less emphasis on the socializing...

If this is just going to be a Hard-Core hunt...then I don't think I'll be there...I don't mind taking a few shots at some long distant P-dogs...but...I am more interested in meeting different GBO members and socializing than just burning ammo out on the prairie...and somehow I don't think that I'm entirely alone in these feelings......I've been trying to visualize how all of this will be set up...and can understand the enormity of getting 30-60 people out into a farmers fields with all those vehicles, and the commotion and such and have anytype of quality hunt..not to mention the safety issues involved as well.....

So...I would like to know something...will there be various shooting locations available for this.will there be a location for those not wanting to shoot to hang out and socialize..and if so...how will this be set up...I've never been involved in PD hunting-shooting before...so forgive my ignorance...how many people can safely shoot at the same time at the PD...are they concentrated in one location or are they spread out over several locations in the same field? The safety issue is a major concern for me here...

With all the talk of getting doors prizes and such from the sponsors here at GBO...one would think that they would like to see more than just 20 people or so,involved in this event... I'm sure they like to see a large turn out on any promotional event, such as this...the more the merrier so to speak...having a pavilian or promotional tents set up so-to-speak,where folks can get out of the sun and cool off and mingle around, have the coolers under to get something cool to drink...and such..

Like I asked... is this going to be more of a PD hunt...or what...a-little clarification would be nice...

Thanks

Mac

For sure I do not and cannot speak for Wes. I'm sure he'll be here some time today to speak to this issue. I was on the phone with him the other evening when he told me he was becoming concerned with the numbers and that he planned to make the post regarding that issue.

But I do know from PMs and our phone conversation a little bit about the set up he has in mind. So from that little knowledge I'll toss in what I can.

Wes has 2-3 friends who will be helping him with this. One of them has a place with an old chicken house converted to a club house. This will kinda serve as the central gathering point for the group. It is here where we will gather in the evenings to perhaps have a campfire and to share stories and BS and have an adult beverage if you so wish. Might even grill a steak or burger or some hot dogs.

He has also mentioned that he and his friends will be splitting up the shooters into three groups or perhaps four depending on how many folks are helping him that day. Each group would be assigned primary and secondary dog town locations to shoot. From what little I know of dog towns some are small and some are enormous. The size and lay out would I think determine how many could safely shoot at any given location.

I believe we'll be sub divided into shooting pairs or threesomes perhaps within each of the groups. Then one of the pair or threesome would shoot at a time with the other or others spotting and taking turns as shooter. Three might be ideal from my total lack of experience here. A shooter, a spotter and one cleaning his rifles.

To address your comments regarding people's reasons for being there since this might have at least partly come from my comments. Yes I do want to do a good bit of PD shooting during the days. This is something I've been wanting to do for at least 40 years and something has always caused me to not be able to. So I do plan to be a pretty serious shooter. That is not to say I'll be at it day light to dark. Depending on how I'm able to set up shade I might end up really restricted as I cannot be out in the direct sunlight long at all. This I will deal with at my expense and trouble.

BUT I do plan to try to spend time with you guys getting to know each of you and talking with each of you. Still for me personally I'd have to say the main draw is the PD shooting. If it were just a gathering to socialize without the PD's quite honestly I'd not have planned to attend.

I'm sure many of you would have signed up in a heart beat without the shooting. I've done that myself in the past at gatherings of folks from this site and others.

It is perhaps possible a solution could be worked out in that regard. That however is strictly Wes' call as the host. I am a mere guest no different than any other of you in any way at all other than I'll have a bunch of goodies to pass out from our sponsors.

From what Wes told me there is not much to do in the area other than shooting/hunting to occupy one's time during the day. But if some folks wanted to spend most of their time socializing and talking or even watching the shooting....who knows...might could work fine.

I plan to use this trip as a get acquainted with Wes opportunity too. I will then later go back and take advantage of his guiding skills and services to perhaps hunt with him on a paying basis for the game he guides for. I don't expect this to be my only trip to OK to hunt with him. For that reason I don't at all feel the need to hunt every minute of each of the four days. Not by any means. I can speak only for me and no one else but I'm sure I can spare the time in four days for others to shoot while I don't and I'm in the category of serious on the shooting.

Pay no attention to all the guns I'm buying for this trip. I'm an inverterate gun buyer/trader. It's a disease I have and you guys better hope it ain't contagious cuz it's expensive. Six months from now you might not find a single one of them still at my house. Just the way I am. Probably 75% to 90% of the guns I bought last year are no longer at my house. I just love to get a new gun, shoot it awhile and then move it on down the road and get another new one to play with awhile. It's what I do.

GB. I am the same way with guns. I have a few that have been here a long time and will stay as long as we can shoot.

My Main raeson for comming is just to visit, meet other Handiholics and share notes on these little rifles and of course hunting in general. I have some good oppertunities for Mule deer at my place in SD and may want to trade a hunt with someone who has other hunting available. In other words visit and just relax. I would like to shoot a little but that is secondary to me.
shot placement is everything.

Mac, the bottom line is.....I want everyone to have fun.

I guess I got a little spooked thinking that I was going to have forty or fifty people show up, with the expectation that they would be throwing no less than one round per minute down range.  I think you'd be hard pressed to find that kind of action even in Montana or Wyoming

Bill did a good job of addressing your concerns, but I'm going to give it a shot too, because, honestly...I'd hate for you not to show up.

Like I said, it won't be as much of a problem if everyone is flexible, and can tolerate moving from one field to another once or twice in a day.  If you're mostly coming for the socializing, this makes it even easier on me.  I just don't want anyone going away disappointed because they thought there were too many shooters there.

You bring up two important issues here......Logistics and Safety.  It's true that most farmers wouldn't let me anywhere near their land again if I showed up with this many people, and drove all over their fields, killing their grass.  Plus, it would be a nightmare to set up safely.  Right now, I can think of no less than six decent towns, plus three smaller towns that I can shoot at.  I am going to get with land owners that have good towns on their land, but that I have not shot at in the past.  Getting permission is not a problem because they want the little pests off of their pastures.

The way I plan on doing this is to split everyone into groups.  There may be five, ten or maybe as few as three in a group.  Each group will have a dog town assigned to it for the day.  You may be in a group that moves from one town to another town sometime during the day if the shooting gets slow.  The last thing I want to do is put so many people in a field at one time that it gets unsafe.

Like I asked... is this going to be more of a PD hunt...or what...a-little clarification would be nice...

I've been going at this thing from the beginning as trying to provide the optimum shooting experience for everyone.  More of a prairie dog shoot than a socializing event, with the socializing being more incidental.  I guess I just wanted everyone to get as much bang for their "buck" so to speak, as they could.  I figure if a guy drives all the way from Ohio to shoot prairie dogs, he's going to want to shoot as many of them as he can.

If, on the other hand, everyone is here more for the socializing aspect, then please come.  I'm not a party planner, I'm more of a party goer    I have a place for us to meet, drink, play pool and BS.  The rest is up to everyone else.

I don't really have any idea what to do with non shooters while every one else is out shooting.  If someone is camping at the camping area, we could set up some sort of pavilion with tents and tarps where everyone could hang out, and relax in the shade.  And, if the non shooters wanted to periodically go out and watch the action, they could shuttle themselves out and back.  I'd even give my mobile number to them so that they could contact me through out the day and find out where everyone is.

Like I said Mac.....I just want everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves.  I've been looking forward to this thing every since we decided to do it.  I'm pretty easy, and I'll do it any way that the majority wants it done.

I kind of look at it this way.........

The first annual H&R/Graybeard Handi Holics Prairie Dog Shoot and Ice Cream Social is going to be a learning experience.  Luckily I am a quick learner and every year after, it will get better and better

I hope this addresses all of  your concerns.  If it doesn't, please keep pecking at me until I do get them.

Something is up with this thread.  I posted a looooong reply to Mac trying to alleviate some of his concerns.  It shows that the last post belongs to Mitchell, but when I check it, it shows Graybeards last post only, not mine or Mitchells.

Anyone else having this problem?

It took me a long time to type that reply

I dont' know how or why, but it seems fixed now.
