Dilema..... Savage 116 or Tikka T3 in 338 WM?

I live in Colorado and go Elk hunting every year, currently been using my 7mm A-bolt.  However, I'm going to Alaska this year for Dall (Hunting w/ Griz tag) and Moose and need a bit more.  I've decided on the 338 WM and am leaning to a Nikon scope.  I am still debating between the Savage 116FXP3 (SS) or the Tikka T3 Lite.  Obviously, Ill be using it for Elk going forward and the 7mm will become strictly deer/antelope.

Opinions wanted?

Thanks!

Oh my gosh, deciding between a Savage and a Tikka?  In my opinion, it isn't a close call.  TIKKA all the way!

Now, granted Tikka SS had a recall lately, but only certain rifles were affected.  If it is outside a particular serial range, then get the Tikka and don't look back.

I myself have several Tikkas, all SS, and just received by T3 SS in .300WSM.  I havent' shot it yet, but, like all Tikkas, I expect it to be awesome.

Yes, Tikka makes the T3 SS in .338 and it should be awesome for what you want, plus it's light and not a bear to carry (no pun intended  :) ).

For many, many reasons - go with the Tikka T3 SS.

I appreciate the feedback.  Does anyone know where to get a hold of the T3 SS Synthetic in a 338.  I've been looking for over a month now, can't order either.  I've called about 30 stores in the Denver area, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Guns America and no one has any idea when they might be available.  Cabelas actually told me they've had Tikkas on order for TWO years, if you can believe that.

Try www.ozarkguns.com.  That's where I bought my T3 SS in .300WSM.

rstickle,

If you want the most accurate rifle and not have to worry that you may be getting one of the recalled Sako/Tikka rifles(the stainless ones that blow up   ) then get the Savage.  Dependable and accurate is what you’ll get with the Savage.  Lawdog

Iffen I was gonna spend my hard earned bucks on a .338 Win. Mag. (something I will NEVER do cuz my .35 Whelen will take care of my needs) then I'd buy a Rem. 700. But then that's what I do pretty much every time I want a new centerfire rifle. Put two more on order this week already.

I know its not one of your choices, but I just bought a winchester 70 in 338. I probably won't hunt with it for a year or two. I need 2 more points to get my black bear tag. Good luck with whichever rifle you choose.

Been messing with a Ruger Mark II stainless/laminated in .338. It is a real good shooter, 3/4" moa. Not punishing either, it is a push instead of a sharp magnum kick.

I respect the construction of the Ruger, my first one to mess with. I know some dont think they will shoot, but I can say this one will. It will be a little heavy to hawl around.

Not trying to sway you in any way, but it could be an option. Cost about $525.00 here.

Graybeard I would tend to agree with you except for one thing remington doesnt make the 338 win at this time.
They are more inclined to try and shove there speciality rem mags on us.
Every gun I have owened that I truly loved was a remington. Still grab a remington when that ocassional chance to deer hunt comes up. But remington has lost business form me due to there lack of cartridge selection

What about that new Remington XCR?  I think that Remington makes it in the .338 Win Mag.

What about an A bolt in 338?
« Reply #10 on: January 23, 2005, 10:13:20 AM »
I had the opportunity to work with an older A bolt in 338 couple years ago.  I was shooting 1-1.5 inch groups at 100 with factory Rem ammo, first time out with it1  I was truly impressed with its accuracy.  I had never been interested in A bolts before that but now I am. Don't they make them in stainless and synthetic too?

Amen -- my .35 Brown-Whelen drives a 225 grain Nosler Partition Jacket over the chronograph at 2800 fps.  That's enough to handle anything in North America, and shoots pretty flat, too.

Thanks for all the feedback, I am going with the Tikka.  Lightweight for hiking all day, and I'll take the extra punch for the one shot.  Accuracy can't be beat from what I've been reading.  Latest comments in the F&S 50 best guns.  Quality is also there and for a great price, $575.

I was able to find it at Gander Mountain in Wisconsin and they're shipping right now.  Can't wait to shoot.  GM has 7 more in different stores if anyone's interested.

I'd go with the Savage. I have a 116 in a 7mmSTW, wicked shooter. Shoots all ammo I've put through it. Also have a 110 in 25-06, same thing.
Buddy has the 116 in a 338 win mag, lighter than my STW and kicks like a mule but is nice to carry, good shooter to.

I would choose ANY USED 338 Remington Ultra Mag or 340 Weatherby over ANY NEW 338 Win Mag. The 338Win Mag cartridge is a RUNT.
GO FOR MORE POWER !!!!!!!
I have NO use for a 338WM....anything it can do a 375 H&H will do better for the same price in ammo, and there is very LITTLE it will do that a 300 Weatherby can't with LESS recoil (and 338 doesn't shoot as flat as a 300)
Nuf' said !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

Bigfoot Wallace, my custom '03 Springfield in .35 Brown-Whelen drives a 225 grain Nosler Partition Jacket 2800 fps.  That's stepping right on the heels of a .338 WM or the .375 H&H.

I doubt if a moose or grizzley could tell the difference.
