220 swift loads for TC brand heavy barrel?
« on: January 19, 2005, 10:04:42 AM »
Does anyone have a load that works for this barrel? I would appreciate the help. Also I bought a new forearm from Boyd's and it contacts the barrel should I take the time to sand this contact out so the barrel is floated?

I can’t believe that anyone would ask for a reloading receipt on the Internet. BUY a Reloading Book! At least one RELOADING BOOK!
Keep your powder dry and your flint sharp

I have a reloading book, in fact I have a lot of reloading books. I was asking about a specific load that has worked well with that barrel. Thanks for wasting my time Mick I thought I had a response worth my time, not a response from an idiot.

220 swift Load

My 220 Swift Encore barrel shoots 38 grains of Varget with Nosler 40 grain #39555 spitzer OAL 2.7235 1/2 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yds( 4shots was one hole and 5th  was out alittle).  Reloading manual Barnes #3 has 40 grain VLC bullet Varget start 41 grains to max 45 grains. Must tell you to start on low end and work up. I love this barrel. It shoots great at 300 yds. Varget shoot good in the 220. Hope this is some place to start. Twyman

34.5 H335 behind 55 gr Dogtown bullet in Win brass with WLR primers. Standard OAL.

Gives me 3/4 groups out of my 26" Swift Encore.  H335 meters much better than the IMR 4064 load I worked up.  Heck, I can actually use my powder measure with the H335, but the 4064 is hand measured each time.

I just got a pound of Varget to work with.  It'll be a while before I get these to the range.

And I have no problems sharing my favorite load recipes with others on these boards. I have several loading books also.

I don't have a encore barrel in this
cal. but I have a
bolt action in it.  The last load I shot in mine was with Johnson Bullet with 38 grains of 4064
www.johnsonprecision.net/ Mine measured out to 2,675 of course this will be different in yours. Since Encores  are   notorious for their long chambers you probably will have to find the sweet spot. But I was really impressed with these Johnson bullets. I was told about this company on another website and found out that if you email them and tell them you would like to try their bullets they will (or they did) send you a few to try out. Its a good company when I go to buy some bullet for my 220 I will buy them there. They were even nice enough to send me a Christmas card and I havent even bought any bullets from them yet. I think they have some 30 cal. I think I will try for my 308. Hope this helped, Robert

sage master,

Without fear of getting lam-basted with sarcastic comments from other forum members I will proceed with my 'dumb question'.  I think that's what forums are for .... asking questions and sharing useful information ;-)

Does T/C make a 'stock' .220 Swift SS Bull barrel?  All I've seen has been their .22-250 barrel, which I've been considering buying.  Anyone have any accuracy experience with that cal with the T/C Encore barrel?  Is the .220 Swift a custom order barrel?

I have that nice reply ignored, but I was surprised. I got my barrel from Cabela's. In Cabela's is says it's exclusive to them. It's stamped factory TC on barrel, maybe the custom shop is making it for Cabela's. I still haven't shot it but maybe this weekend.

220 Swift from Cabela's

Sage Master,

As the subject line reads, I got mine at Cabela's.  Also saw in a catalog that they are "exclusive" to Cabela's.  I have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x with a ballistic plex reticle.  Love the combo.

As for loads try this. this is out of the current Hornady Load Manual:

Win. Case
CCI   BR-2 Primer
50 Gr. V-Max...Hornady
H414 powder @ 41.5 grs
OAL 2.680"

4 shot group was .691, the fifth bullet was pulled so bad that I won't mention where it landed.  Had a guy shooting a 7mm Mag, with a brake next to me.  LOUD to say the least.  Must have been nervous in the service.
My wife once made the mistake of telling me "all of your guns look alike"...No, I've had this gun for a long time! LOL
