.45-70 loads for boar???
« on: January 18, 2005, 07:42:42 PM »
Well I did it, got my 45-70 Handi yesterday and will order the Williams FP sight and Hornet front blade.  Now, I need to start working on loads for this beauty.  I'm planning a boar hunt in the fall and wonder if anyone can recommend a starting point for bullet weight and powder.  Don't need to stop elephants, but this being a single shot, I want adequate knock down power in case I stumble across a monster. I'll be hunting in a heavy wooded area so ranges will be short.  My assumption is less than 50 yards and probably a lot less. Another consideration is that I will more than likely remove the recoil pad from the stock. I need a shorter length of pull but don't want to cut the stock unless it's absolutely necessary. My thought was to install some sort of simple butt plate, maybe steel or brass. I think I can tolerate a fair amount of recoil, if not, then I'll cut the stock and reinstall the recoil pad. Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome Aboard :D

First off...cut the stock and refit a good Simms Limbsaver recoil pad...you'll be thankful you did...

Second...do you want to shoot jacketed or cast?...jacketed ...only 1 jacketed bullet I would recommend...Nosler 300 grain Partition...and for powder...H4198...it's the best combination I can think of...and I'll be using them this coming febuary on my hog hunt with like2hunt and digger...You'll see a-lot of others mentioned...and no...I haven't taken one yet...but hopefully soon...as far as cast bullets...there are others here than have more experience with those...but I like Cast Performance 405 grain WLNGC bullets...I've gotten terrific accuracy from my 45-70's and they are some tuff bullets...the partitions out of my 18" 1895GS are clocking right at 2300 FPS...and the CP 405 grainers are at 1800 FPS

You can't go wrong with the Rem 405gr JSP bulk bullet loaded to 1800fps.  They are cheap and hit like the hammer of thor.

It'd be simpler (and feel better) to get yourself a youth stock from NEF and keep your recoil pad.

Thanks for the responses,  I'll try the recommended bullets and loads and look into a youth stock from NEF.  Mine is a laminated version.  I'll have to see if they offer one to match.  Thanks again!

I shot a hog in Texas, last Feb.  I used the 300gr. win. nosler partion golds, in a factory load.  I shot her between the shoulder blades, as she faced me at 100+ yards.  The bullet went between the blades, blew up the lungs, went thru the guts, and exited between her back 2 teats.  This will be my go-to load for hogs and black bear from now on.  BTW, the recoil was pretty mild.
