No more Remington 700 BDL SS?
« on: January 16, 2005, 02:59:12 AM »
I was reading a shooting related magazine yesterday and noted that Remington is coming out with a 700 SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic) Stainless.  From the ad, it just looks like they redesigned the stock.

Then I checked the Remington website a little while ago and noticed that there are no longer any 700 BDL SS models.  Does this mean that the SPS Stainless is taking over the BDL SS rifles?

I can't tell you how many BDL SS rifles I own, but let's just say it's quite a few.  Surprisingly, although I am a huge Tikka fan, I own more Remington 700 BDL SS rifles than any other make and model.  Remington says that the price of the new SPS Stainless is less than we would expect, and it is in fact lower than what the BDL SS models used to be. I just hope that the rifles are at least the same, and hopefully better, than what they used to be.

Does anybody know anything in particular about the SPS Stainless?

GB posted a report recently on this issue. It didn't sound like the SPS is the same overall quality offering as the BDL SS. I've looking for a BDL SS in .280 for a while now....don't tell me you have one

Here is the new offerings http://www.remington.com/default

I had numerous chances to buy a .280 in the BDL SS, but I never did because that paricular cartridge is most useful to handloader (of which I am not).  Sounds like the value of the BDL SS might increase.  I'll take a look around and see GB's report on the subject.

The SPS is their replacement for the ADL which is no longer being made. There is a hinged floorplate and the synthetic stock has been upgraded. The interesting thing about the SPS is that all the standard calibers have 24 inch barrels and the magnums are 26. The price is considerably lower than for the BDL and CDL.

So then where is Remington cutting corners to get the price lower?  Are the barrels the same thickness and quality?  Is the SS receiver different in any way?  Knowing Remington, although the MSRP has dropped, I seriously doubt that they dropped their percentage in profits, so something's gotta give here.

I've not yet seen one of the new SPS stainless guns but have seen and held the matte black models in the WSM line of cartridges. They look for all the world like the old ADL line but with a hinged floor plate. The stock definitely looks like an upgrade from the ADL plastic stock to me. I assume the SS version would be similar with a matte SS finish but not having seen one yet I can't say for sure.

I went back and examined the Remington site again and noticed that they have a new "CXR" model.  Kinda looks like the Sako 75 Synthetic stock-type design.  Remington says that the new model has an anti-rust coating on it.  Don't know anything about it - or how long it will last, but the gun is actually more expensive than the traditional BDL SS.  Then again,  if the stock is different (hopefully better) and it has the coating on it, then it might be worth the extra money.

I always threw out the junk remchester plastic stocks anyway and replaced them with better stocks - mostly McMillan or HS Precision.  Still, I'm interested in seeing on in person.

The Sendero stainless fluted is gone also.  No more "bean-field" rifle for Big Green?  I'm intrigued to see and handle some of these new offerings even though the 700 BDL SS I own no longer has the factory stock or trigger unit.

Big Tom,

The .280 Remington is my favorite cartridge. I own one in the BDL DM, and love that rifle. I passed up a .280 BDL SS about 4 years ago when I lived in S. MS. I regret that to this day. I pledged I would never do it again. I have been longing for a .280 CDL, and went to order one Saturday. I was told by the two dealers in town, they no longer could get them. I even went to WAl-Mart, but to no avail. I ended up buying a Winchester 70 FWT which is a gun I have wanted for about 6 years now. Since they no longer chamber the .280, I got a 7mm WSM. If I ever happen to stumble upon a .280 CDL, I'll find a way to buy it.
