I'll answer this one also ambushhunter jr and then let the others have a shot at it. The .223 is a great gun for what your intentions are. The ammo is much more afordable for a youngster (for anyone really) and you have a lot of shooting ahead to become proficient. To punch holes in paper don't limit yourself by having to buy expensive ammo. The .223 is a great gun!!!....<><....

The .223 is much cheaper to shoot specially if you don't handload, but even if you do, the .223 is still the way to go, for now anyway. Factory ammo will cost as little a $3 or less for 20 rounds for the .223, but best price for the .204 is $12 or more for 20. For a handloader, new .204 brass is still not available and may be as late as June or later before it is. If ammo cost/availablility is any concern I'd recommend the .223. The handis shoot extremely well with several different factory choices that are easy on the pocket book....

reading you last topic you said it was going to be used for targets and i think you said varmints  both of these calibers are great when it comes to that but i think in this case i would get the 223 with the 22 inch bull barrel like you said earlier. ammo for the 223 is very very cheap the 204 ruger isn't both are cheap to load for but still the 223 is cheaper . i think that the 223 is the best your going to get trust me its hard to live with out a 223. BTW i have both calibers in a handi but all i really needed was the 223 remington its just that i've got this sickness that if i don't buy atleast one handi every two months i fall into a coma.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

I'm not as bad yet; I can go 6 months or so before it sets in. I did run across a temporary fix by getting into reloading -- but I have a feeling that's going to be as bad as Handi-itis, if not worse! Then, I can justify the cost of the Handi along with the fact that I can reload for it cheaper (ya, right), and God only knows where it all will end...

Watch out for escalating Handi-dependancy.  Last week I phoned my Guru to order a .17HMR and ended up buying a .22WMR UV as well.   Ordering 2 at a time is a definite sign of the disease.

I am from the old 06 school and can lad from 110-220 with the 30-06 ,about 27 years ago I got the first midel Ruger Ranch gun in a trade and was going to dump it---------as a utiliy weapon and round it is excellent and I recommend the 223 now.

  I love it !  It will kill all the game we can hunt with a rifle here IL.  Whch is a sort list Coyotes, fox, and Skunk.  I wish we could use rifles for more game but Chicago area kind of screws that up for us.
