New to BP. Would like to try, but frankly I'm not sure where to start. Was wondering if there were any good detailed books on traditional BP shooting. Including both percussion and flintlocks, rifles, shotguns, and pistols (including cap and ball revolvers)? Thanks.

I would start with Lyman's "Black Powder Handbook". I think it will cover all that you will need to know to get started.

Welcome to Greybeard. If you go over the posts on greybeard, you will discover a lot about blackpowder shooting - and that there is more than one way to put a round ball out the barrel.

Lyman does put out an excellent book, and it is necessary to read a bit - especially the chapter on black powder safety.

I would also go to the range and talk with some of the traditional rifle shooters. They like to talk about their rifles and shooting, almost as much as making smoke.

Don't get fustrated, there is a ton of help waiting for you to ask a question. And no question is dumb, what's dumb is not to ask.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time at the range and in the field.

After some searching I've found 4 books that probably apply. Lymans Black Powder Handbook and Reloading Manual by Sam Fadala 2nd edition, The Complete Black Powder Handbook by Sam Fadala, Gun Digest's Black Powder Loading Manual revised -n- expanded, and Lymans Black Powder Handbook by Kenneth Ramage. I'll likely order the Gun Digest manual and one of the others (probably one of the Lymans). I'm also reading everything I can find on this message board and one other ML message board. I think I know which rifles would likely suit me but I want to get more infomed before I buy.

As some of the other reprobates have already advised you..........do not ever be timid with a question around here. There are plenty of us willing to help you and some of em actually know what it is that they are doing. You will find soon enough that you will not ever be able to get enough lituature on the subject. Stay safe.King
