Help with RCBS Rockchucker
« on: February 03, 2003, 05:54:52 AM »
Ok, I know I'm home sick from work today, but that doesn't mean my brain shouldn't function.  I finally got my reloading equipment set up here down in Iowa and I purchased a used, newer style Rockchucker.  I can't figure out for the life of me how to use the darn priming arm?  I see the hole for the hinge pin and I mount it in there and there's the slot in the ram that in slides in, but I just can't figure out how to use it and get a case in it.  Someone please help me, I'm sure it's stupid simple, but I can't figure it out!  Also, I think I have the shellholder in right, but run me through that also.  The only other press I've used is an old O-frame Bonanza press of my father's and the Rockchucker is just a little different.  Help me out, I want to start loading!!!!

I'll see if I can help. On the rock chucker, there is a set of holes at the top and the bottom of the press. The primer arm mounts on the lower holes in front. there is a spring that mounts with it to keep the arm towards you and out of the way until ready to use it. The top of the press ram you'll see a slot in which your shell holder slides into. insert your brass case into the shell holder, raise it to the top, insert primer in the cup on top of the arm, push the arm forward into the slot in the ram, lower the case onto the primer until seated, raise and remove the case. You mention you've used another press, I have to beleive I'm probably covering everthing you already know. anyway, good luck

Duh!  I figured out a different way with shorter cases, but I couldn't do it with my .30-06, so I knew there had to be another way, thanks.  This also means that the retaining clip for the shellholder goes around the back, not the front, right?

You would be much happier if you tossed the priming arm in a drawer or the trash bought a hand priming tool such as the Lee or RCBS. My 1972 Rockchucker has only been used to prime  1 box of brass in 30 years.

Selmer,

You're gonna love the handheld Lee Autoprime.  I actually keep two of them on my bench, one setup for large primers, the other setup for small primers.

I received my second autoprime about two months ago, and it was nowhere near the quality of my older one.  I had to open up the channel that leads from the primer tray to the seating stem to allow the small primers to pass through.  This second primer also tends to allow the primers to get caddywhompus from time to time in the seating area.

For the money, it's still the best deal around.  You'll love it.
