Paul, well yeah ya can. Meaning the gun will go bang.  :)  But ya really don't wanna. Not real sure the soft lead shot will damage the threads but might as it is traveling fast. Will no doubt get some lead in the threads making it harder to screw the insert in and out later and it will also blow the pattern pretty badly which is the number one reason not to do it I think. Now iffen it is fer snakes up close and personal then it might open the pattern a bit for easier kills.

Just use a brand of shell that uses a plastic shot wad. That doesn't help the shot pattern without the "choke", but it will(I think) help keep the threads clean.  Pat 8)

I have been experimenting with this barrel a little bit.. I liked the idea of the 45-410, but soon realized I was trading 45colt accuracy for the ability to shoot 410.  The lead (bullet nose to start of rifling) is large with this barrel.  I have tried a variety of cast lead bullet loads 255 g to 340g at varying velocities - still not done. Looking for the best load and then I'll stick with it (for deer mostly).  300 g jacketed HP (Hornady) and SP (Sierra's) are next.  

I did some patterning using Remington Express Long Range 3" #6shot 11/16 oz.  Here's what I got after averaging several shots.

By the way, Lyman's shotshell handbook has a good section on evaluating patterns - That's what I used  except I shot @25yds instead of 40 -- minor detail huh?  Well I'll redo it at 40yds next trip to the range.  Pattern % Total hits inside 30" Diameter was 58% - Equates to a Modified but probably not that good at 40yds.. Core (20") hits / outer ring (20 to 30") was .78 or 78%.   And the German method gave me a "thickening rate" of 1.4 which is on the tight side of well distributed.  I will do it at 40yds and not get it that good for sure.

The insert is supposed to de-spin the shot cup & load..  A spinning load of pellets throws them out - killing your pattern.

Heck - I've had fun with it too. Not much hunting, just clays so far.  

Gonna maybe take a deer with it soon though.  We are in our rifle/pistol season now.

I have a 14" 45-410 barrel for my Contender and have not had much problem with accuracy.  I'm just shooting bulk ammo with cast bullets, 300g I think.  I've never tried to measure any groups with it, but it dose well on cans and sticks of 2x2 pine at 20 to 30 yards with just the factory bead and plastic rear sight.  It also works for picking quarters out of the air.  Although I do miss some so maybe it is the barrels fault (lol).

I would say this is the most fun barrel I have.  It's great for hunting and a pleasure for plinking.

Serious though I didn't know TC made them in 14" I've only seen 10" --or maybe the one you have is a ribbed shotgun barrel type...they longer?

Ever tried slugs from it?? I bet that works well. 410 slugs are expensive though.

Ok, IÂ’ve probably been watching too much American shooter, but anyway.  

Yes the barrel I have is 14" stainless with the vented rib.  It has a bead at the end and a plastic rear sight slide into a notch in the rib.  

No I havenÂ’t used any 410 slugs in it.  IÂ’ve given it some thought, but IÂ’ve heard that the 45Â’s do better then the 410 slugs, especially if you reload.  IÂ’m not sure of all the specifics on the comparisons.  I know IÂ’ve seen it mentioned on here before though.

I use mine mainly for squirrel and crows..as they raid my pecan trees..thirty yards max..mine likes 7 1/2 better than the bigger shot.  Alpo and others have used theirs for rabbits.  the barrel is just a hoot to shoot..good snake ridder also.. :grin:

I’ve used mine mainly for rabbits and a few crows.  I would agree that 30 yards is about the max.  

It’s a blast to shoot, especially when on my first trip out a hunting buddy told me I’d never hit a rabbit with that.  After going 3 for 5 (1 more with 2 less shots then him with his shotgun) he didn’t have too much more to say on the matter.  

I’ve heard of it taking a deer two with the 45’s, but have no personal experience with that.
