I HUNT FERAL HOGS AND DEER WITH SUPERREDHAWK.44MAG,SHOTS ARE MOSTLY WITHIN 50 YDS.WOULD A REDDOT OR SCOPE BE BEST?PLEASE GIVE BRAND NAMES AND SIZES.MUCH THANKS.

It's all in what you like. I have a SRH in 44 topped with a Bushnell Trophy 2-6, hardly ever shoot it on anything other than 2 power. If I were to buy another scope, think it would be a straight 2x. Have 2 of these Bushnells that are just lying around, figured I'd put one to good use.

I've got a Bushnell Holoscope atop my Colt 44 mag. Anaconda. Haven't had a chance to hunt with it yet but it sure tickles my fancy on the range.

Never tried the holo sights but red dots are not very good for bright sunlight days. Great in the evening or morning early. I went out for rabbit in the snow and it was useless.

I put a red dot on my deer gun and it came with a daytime filter that alows me to use it in bright sunshine. Works good for me, anyway? I think US Search and Rescue teams also use red dots on their survival pistols? Just don't get a junk one.

I have both on my handguns and I use them for different things. I do all my hunting at archery range. I dont shoot if the animal is more than 30 yards and like to shoot closer than that if possible. So either will work generally but if I know Ill be shooting at dark colored animals in a dark setting, like black piggies back in the brush, Ill grab something with a red dot or lighted reticle scope. If Ill be shooting in a high light area say at a pig or deer in a food plot at midday Ill always grab a scoped gun. I have found that under some conditions it is difficult to see the dot in red dot scopes on a light colored animal at high light times. I currently have a Bushnell Trophy with the 4 dial in reticle red dot on a Contender .411JDJ, have an Eotech Holo sight on a S/W 657-5 PC, have a NIKON MONARCH DOT SIGHT 1, 4, 6, 10 M.O.A. DOT on a BullBerry Contender .41RemMag, and all the rest of my hunting handguns have either a 2X, 1.5X4, or 2X7 scopes. The brands are Leupold, Burris, Bushnell Elite 3200 Fire Fly, and T/C.

If you plan on shots under 50 yards I think a red-dot is great. You get quicker sight acquisition with the red dot than a scope IMHO. But if you plan on longer shots I would highly recommend a Leupold 4X.

My three Contender pistol barrels all wear Nikon 2X scopes. I've owned Burris 2-7X, Leupold 2X & 4X, and tried a Tasco Red Dot in the past. I prefer the Nikons.

Like others have said the red dot was useless on a bright day. I had one of my Burris scopes fail after ten rounds on a 44 Mag. I have no complaints about the Leupolds.

I have hunted with my 44MAG with a red-dot on it, and I did not have a problem with seeing the dot in the sunlight. I get the red-dots with the brightness adjustments. Works great for me. :grin:

At least with the Holosight it was hard to see in low light-glare.

I have a bushnell elite 2x, hold's zero well using the bigbore wheelguns, anything more than 2X you need a shooting stick or something to keep you still;) enough to shoot. What a differance using a scope on a revolver, accuracy really increases greatly. Love hunting big game with a wheelgun;) Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

I have a Burris Speed Dot on my .454.Went through a couple of the cheaper Red Dots that would not handle the recoil.I have know problems at all with sun-light with mine.The only problem with a Red Dot is that after I bought mine I found out there illegal to hunt with in Idaho.Anything that takes a battery is illegal to use on you firearm.

Still fun and quick to the target but I feel perty stupid and should have gotten a Burris or Leupold traditional.I'll have to take it off to hunt with it or........Take it off after?

Jayco, Try one of the TRijicon Reflex sights. They use tritium technology i.e. no batteries. I have one with the 12" triangle on my 45/70 BFR, mwhich seems unaffected by the recoil (after all they were developed for the military). I use the point of the triangle for close shots, and place the base on the back of the animal for further shots. The 12" triangle also serves as a primitive range finder. If it covers a small whitetail, then I know the deer is approximately 100 yards away. Good luck.
