No scopes
« on: January 02, 2005, 03:50:28 PM »
I had the most fun the other day shooting an old remington 514 22lr single shot.  It has an aftermarket hooded front sight and an open ladder sight on the rear.  It was much lighter than my other scoped rifles.  It was kinda nice to take out an old gun and plink at a can with no worry over the scope.  I was wondering if any of you folks still hunt with open sights.  This gun was purchased by my 54 year old father who has always wore very thick glasses.  He bought the scope to compete in a local Thurs. night card shooting match.  He payed for the rifle in winnings on the first night.

I finally scoped my .22, but my Browning B92 in .44 Mag is iron only.  Both my Marlins (.375Win and .45-70) sport scopes in Warne Quick Release rings.  I practice wiht the iron sights at the range, out to 200 yards, but haven't really hunted with iron sights for several years.

My newest firearm, a sybthetic .30-06 Remington 700 ADL (all black), is outfitted with a peep sight.  I decided to get back to my roots with that one, back when hunting skills meant more.  Besides being much lighter, it can make you a better hunter and a better shot.  I can hold a 3 inch group, slightly high and a little right at 100 yards off the bench.  I'm sure I could tighten up the group with a scope, but I like it the way it is.

Out in the woods, the use of a Monocular or Binoculars is required with a firearm like that, expecially if you must distinguish between Buck and Doe.  I use a Monocular.

At the range some people dont understand why anybody would buy a new rifle and NOT put a scope on it.  To keep them quiet, I just tell them its a  "bad weather gun".

My military pattern rifles all have strictly irons---save a wayward AR-----but my bolt action sporters all have scopes.

That way I remain proficient with both sighting systems.

My .458 WM and M-46 Huskys, open sights only.  The rest have scopes, even the .416 and .460.

I have a number of rifles that are open sights.  Last year I took a nice(230+ lb.) Wild Boar with a Win. M71 .348 that was given to me when my father in-law passed away.  Still take Dad's old Westernfield .22 single shot bolt action out for a go at Ground Squirrels and such.  Nice to every so often to get back to one's roots.  Lawdog

Only my milsurps are scopeless, mainly because they don't have integrated mounts and I don't want to permanently modify them.  If I ever buy myself a lever-gun though I think I'll go for peep-sights on it instead of a scope.

Half inch group,
I hunt at my home part of the deer season but I always go on a trip to Durham county,NC with my family.  It requires a one mile hike to where we hunt.  The first thing to go because of weight was the binoculars.   This year I had to judge a buck by the scope.  I had shot a nice eight pt. on the first afternoon so I wanted to get a good look before I used up my last tag.  I got busted.  The binoculars are a little cumbersome in the thick woods.  I really like the idea of a monocular.  What type do you use?

I hunt in Utah where the distances are long.  Sometimes use my .22 with open sights for rabbits, but scopes are nice for longer shots.  Also, I tend to shoot high and to the right.  Maybe I'll try using a peep sight one of these days...
