Best affordable .270 WSM rifle
« on: December 30, 2004, 09:52:13 AM »
I've pretty much decided on getting a .270 WSM.  The question now is in which rifle.  Browning, Winchester or Tikka (will Remington be chambering them any time soon?).  I know it's like asking if you like Skippy or Jiff peanut butter better, but any opinions or favorites - and the rationale behind it?  They're all pretty good rifles to be sure.  I'm just looking for that extra edge, if it even exists.  Thanks!

Remington already does chamber one rifle in 270WSM, and they will be adding more to their line up as well. I have a Winchester and love it. I can get 3/4" 3 shot groups if I do my part. I do not like the stock on Brownings, as they do not fit me well. Tikka some people like them, but I just do not like the feel of all the plastic parts the T3 has. If you want some thing even cheaper, look at a Howa, or a Savage. I have a 116 Savage in .3006 and love it.  But if I were going to buy a new rifle tomorrow, it woud be a Remington or a Winchester.

I like Jiff. :)   I saw a real nice Sako (with blue not SS barrel) for 975.00 but if you are looking in the 600.00 -700.00 range I might look at the Browning Stainless Stalker.

Have you thought about the Weatherby Vanguard.  I saw one in a local gun shop and it was a stainless synthetic version.  They are very affordable and have a accuracy guarantee.

Remington has a new BDL that looks like an ADL. Meaning black plastic stock and the matte black finish but with the hinged floor plate. The one I held today was marked $469 I think. Should be on dealer's shelves right now. At least they are in stock at the gunstore I trade with.

Bajaye,

You want the "best bang for your buck" then check out the offerings from Savage.  My M10 .270 WSM started out shooting just under 3/4 inch groups and only got better with load work.  Now it groups around a 1/2 inch and is one excellent game getter.  Savage is about the most accurate out of the box rifles being made today.  You can spend more but you won't get anything better.  Lawdog

If you can find a used Tikka Whitetail for under $300 that would be a deal. They do exist.  Also Steyr has a Prohunter synthetic stock in .270.  Looked like a very nice gun but I chose the wood Tikka (actually my wife chose the Tikka  :D )

I have used the Steyr products in the past for various applications and it has never let me down.

Good Luck,
Doug

Does it matter much with the Brownings that the barrel length is an inch shorter for the .270 WSM --- both in terms of accuracy and recoil?

What is the advantage of the 270 WSM over a regular 270?

270 WSM and Recoil Pad

Try a Winchester M70 Featherweight.  My Win. 7mm WSM ran $600 in the Phx metro area.  It occurs to me that you couldn't go wrong with the company that developed the cartridge and the gun.   Last I looked, Gallery of Guns via the Winchester website will give you a good idea of the cost in your zip code and area.

One thing though...save enough money to have a Simms Limbsaver recoil pad put on it.  IMHO, it's better than the Pachmayr Decelerator, or whatever Winchester/Browning is putting on the M70 these days.  Remington is including it on their rifles as the R3 pad.  Might save a few bruises and some arthritis.

Ron, if you look at the ballsitics...the .270 WSM is one of the few that has a definite edge over the std .270. It is up approaching the 7mm Rem mag power range.
I was contemplating one but for the purpose of hunting Deer and Antelope in I felt a .280 Rem. was more than enough gun. :money:  :money:

I picked up a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow in .270WSM at Walmart  for less than $400 a year ago.  I believe they still offer them for about that price.  I have been quite happy with mine.  It even comes with a decent recoil pad.  It generally puts 3 shots in less than an inch at 100 yards off the bench with my handloads.  You didn't mention your budget, but if you are after "bang for the buck", the Super Shadow is tough to beat.
