.17m2 for squirrels
« on: December 29, 2004, 04:53:59 PM »
just got my contender carbine barrel in .17m2.
put a simmons pro airgun scope 6-18 on it.
wow! is this thing accurate!  i cleaned the barrel with sweets every ten rounds up to 100. it grouped all over the place for the first 20 shots or so then settled into about 3/8inch with a flyer now and then.
then i switched from hornady to cci and the flyers went away!
i was shooting golfballs at 50yards. and bowling pins at 125. from a rest, it was boring after a while.
i got this barrel for squirrel hunting. i generally use a .22 carbine barrel for my contender, and try to head shoot only! this new cartrige will extend my range a little, as it shoots very flat.

I experimented with the 17HM2 when the first rifles were available.  I bought a Savage bolt action right before squirrel season.  I sighted it dead on at 40 and it was still dead on at 80Yds.  I shot a few squirrlels with it and was very impressed.  I also try for head shots only, but I shot one directly through the chest at 40yds to see what it would do.  Instant death but didn't tear it up like I thought it would.  I have sold my Savage and now have a replacement barrel on my 10/22.   The short 17 is going to be THE perfect small game round.  I am thinking of a Contender barrel as well.

I tryed the 17 hrm and in my situation its to loud, is the h2 as loud? or more in line with 22long rifle? I shoot ground squirls off my front porch. Im shooting directly into a 30ft high dirt bank ,but the sound of gunfire doesnt make the neibors very happy.Id like to extend my range a little but not piss off the neibors.[ neibors are 50 yds off to each side, not down range.] my shootable range is 35 to 75 yds. Im now shooting std vel 22lr.any shots out beyond 50 yds are iffy at best.

Hey dangerranger, you need to get one.  I had the same problem with noise and the 17hmr.  The mach2 is much better.  It is my new by-the back door gun.  Mine is a savage, very good accuracy at 100 yards.  It might be a hair louder than a .22 but not much.
