Strangest thing in the world happened today
« on: December 25, 2004, 03:54:29 PM »
My brother and I went out duck hunting this morning.  Now we have hunted ducks for a number of years but never used a dog (we always hunted flooded timber in waders, so we just would walk out and get them ourselves).  This year is our first year to take the boat out and hunt.  We do have a pair of pups that we're working on training, but they don't retrieve yet.

Ok, that being said, we were out this morning.  Pretty darn bad morning.  I saw a flock of about 15 mallards that I couldn't call in, and then 2 wood ducks that wouldn't come in either.  We were just about to leave when we saw a single duck; a teal.  We hit the calls and it came for the decoy spread.  It got almost there but veered away, but just inside of workable range.  I put up and took a shot.  He hit the water and was twitching away.  It was late in the morning so we pull up anchor and get the push poll to go over and retrieve the downed bird.  We get half way there and I see an eagle flying over.  I'm not instantly alarmed; I've seen plenty eagles before.  Then all of a sudden the little bastage swoops down and grabs the duck out of the water.  Needless to say I was quite ticked off.  Basically I just wanted to see how rare an occurance this is.  I know it can't happen too often.  Suprised the heck out of me.

Thats a new one for me.  Kind of neat though.

Don't be ticked, you will remember this the rest of your life.

Hey, I saw a Great Blue heron flying with a bufflehead in its mouth once, and another friend had a duck stolen by a seal.

It happens.

I watched an eagle chase a snow goose around for 15 minutes or so earlier this year. I don't know what finally happened as they disapeared beyond the hedgerow, but my money's on the eagle.

Redtailed Hawks are common

When hunting in a flooded rice field, the wind was at our backs.  The ducks drifted down to the far side and we let a dead teal float since the birds were flying too good.  Picking up the others.

After the hunt, we scared a Redtailed off of it after it had stripped the back skin and taken 3 beak full's out of the left breast.  Trimmed it off and fried it anyway.

Had to go get a Greenhead away from a Redtail too.  He didn't have time to sample it.  And he didn't argue with the motor boat coming after him.  He left it in the grass.

Watch the hawks

It is not unusual to see eagles during the goose migration. They follow and clean up the sick and dieing geese. I have not seen one come pick up a duck. It is not uncommon to see them picking at a dead goose while you are shooting at others. Seemingly oblivious to the shooting.
