All Weather .280 Remington
« on: December 23, 2004, 07:17:15 PM »
After 4-5 years in a row of rain, sleet, snow and mud I give up! I have worked hard for years to put several beautiful "woodies" in the gun safe but I need an all weather rifle!
I have decided on a .280 Rem( for several reasons that I wont get into) which unfortunately really cuts down on the selection process. I would also like to spend no more than 750-800$ I'd also like to get at least a 22" stainless barrel.
The Browning SS Stalker and Ruger All weather SS are all that I've found as possibles so far....and I haven't tried either one of these rifles in quite a while.
(I sure wish they made a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle in SS/Syn G.B.!  :( )
Any comments/suggestions out there?  :D

Me too but I'd prefer mine with the laminated stock. I like the warm feel of real wood as opposed to the cold and noisy plastic. IT is really just as stable, well OK maybe 99% as stable as plastic.

Why not buy an LSS Mtn. rifle and rebarrel? Or just live with the .270 Win. after all it really is as close to a twin of the .280 as you can get.

Once long ago Remington actually made exactly what you're wanting but in .270 not .280. How do I know? I bought one. My oldest son now owns it since I gave it to him as a Christmas present one year. It is an ADL configuration with a serious plastic stock not the floppy things most often used and has hex head action screws. Metal is all stainless and it is a true mountain rifle configuration. I'm told it was made two years but never cataloged. I also had one in .300 Win. Mag just like it but couldn't take the recoil so trade it on the .270 Win.

As much as I've long wanted a .280 Remington rifle I've never owned one. Owned several .270s tho. These days my love affair with my LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 is so strong tho I doubt the .280 could lure me away. Using Hornady Light Mag ammo I get .280 velocity and accuracy most often on the order of 1/2" at 100 yards.

My son has a Ruger stainless laminated .280 and loves it. It's accurate and actually had a decent trigger from the factory. He put a Nikon 3x9 Monarch on it. He did float the barrel this year and it got a bit more accurate.

Big Tom, I just purchased a Weatherby Accumark in .280 Rem for a bit over $900.  I have seen Accumark's in standard calibers for as little as $750, so you might keep your eyes open in that direction.  They really are lovely rifles, and shoot great.........

Me too GB....in 30.06....another one I let get away!
I know a guy that HAS one in 7MM and .270

I like 165gr bullets...have lost two trophy bucks in my life with quartering away shots with lighter bullets(120gr & 140gr) from a Browning 7MM/08. Both were eventually killed by other hunters I knew in the area.  My shots were right on but one glanced off the shoulder blade and out the brisket the other went along the ribcage and didn't get lungs. These were big bucks...208lbs & 223lbs(dressed)
I was using Remington factory bullets at the time but since then I moved to 165s and have killed several critters dead in their tracks...a few with the same shot angles. I guess you dance with the girl who pleases you.

Tom I would consider an Accumark but I was thinking more along the lines of a carry gun(a little lighter & shorter)....an Ultra Light Weight would be wonderful but way over my $$$ range.

I killed two of my deer this year with a Ruger All Weather 77 in .280. It's a keeper, works like magic, shoots like a laser and is easy to care for. I got soaked almost every day I was out, with no problems. I too am not comfortable with taking some wood stocked beauties out in the worst weather of the year, so the Ruger is my new "go to gun". I'm not crazy about the new black plastic stocks, so I bought one of the old "boat oars" to put on it. I'm probably the only one in the world that liked those stocks.

I hunt in the Adirondack Mts. in upstate NY.  I carry a Remington 700 KS mountain rifle from Remington's custom shop, caliber .280 Remington.  With this rifle I killed an 11 pt buck last month.   You can find the KS used now and then.  Mine is SS, but Remington does make a matte finish barrel which is less costly.  I never carry my rifle slung, it is always in my hands.  With a 2.5x8 Leupold mounted in Talley LW aluminum rings it weighs a bit over 7 lbs and is a joy to carry and shoot.

If you're good with a file and 600 grit abrasive paper then you can get the Ruger and re-work the trigger per www.centerfirecentral.com.     It's easy to take apart, easy to put together, ----- but like all trigger jobs: it takes good work to maintain the proper angles and a safe sear engagement.    If you can't do it, then buy a drop-in set-up by Timney, I believe.    Either way, I'd buy a Ruger ahead of any other rifle out there except a Remington.     I have owned two Ruger's, did the trigger jobs on both of them and sold one to a friend for his nephew.     Everybody liked that rifle.........all-weather, of course!

I don't know from experience, but I'm not fond of the prices people pay for Brownings and for what they sometimes get in return.    I know people who love 'em, and people who send 'em back for warranty work!   Who needs that with an expensive rifle.

Make mine a Ruger!

Well if you look around, Remington made a limited run of SS Mtn Rifles for about 2 years. They also chambered a Remigton 700 BDL in SS. The .280 is my favorite caliber, and I have hunted with it a lot the last 3 years. I am debating whether or not to but a CDL in .280. I have a BDL DM in .280, but just really like what Remington has done with the CDL.

Thanks for the input guys! :D

I got a great deal on a new Browning Stainless Stalker in .280 Rem and its on the way. Boy, Remington and Winchester have really limited their Syn SS offerings to mainly the short mags and mags. I guess thats what everyone will be shooting in the near future.

Me? I'll muddle along with a .356 Win, .300 WSM, .308 Win., .280 Rem, .270 Win, and my "varmint gun" a  custom 26" barrelled 7mm/08
Encore.
