Squirrels
« on: December 23, 2004, 01:57:09 AM »
I have two "colonies" of squirrels in my yard....the front yard squirrels and the back yard squirrels, for lack of better names.  Both are territorial when it comes to feeding time.

I can actually tell to which group each belongs by their coloring.  The backyard bunch has much more white in their coat, a kind of frosted look.  One actually had a white face, but he has apparently died.

One of the front yarders had a serious problem of nerves, fleas, or skin disorder.  He was constantly scratching.... even while he ate.  His romps would be interrupted every 10 feet with a somersault, in an effort to scratch the itch.  He lasted for about 6 months.  Just disappeared.  Guess something got him while he was scratching.  No moral intended.

The wife & I had three squirrel populations. We told them apart by their tails. Long tails with a dark stripe, short tails, and white margined tails. In order to keep them off the birdfeeders, we started putting out corn and suet in a bushytail-designated feeding area.

The white tails were quite greedy and annoyingly aggressive about raiding the birdfeeders even before they'd go for their own food. They're all dead now. Had to shoot a couple of gluttonous short tails, too. Long tails were most cooperative and therefore prospered, eventually driving the short tails out of the squirrel area by weight of numbers. So, they currently just fight over the squirrel food among themselves.

We had a "misfit" as well. He'd sustained some type of neurologic injury, probably from a previous car strike, as he had a big area denuded of fur on his back. He could run, albeit slowly. I probably could have caught him if I had sprinted after him. Could climb, but would never jump from tree to tree. Also, whenever he sat up on his haunches to nibble on the corn cob, he would oscillate back and forth like a tall fir tree in the wind. Named him "Wobbly" because of that. Occasionally, he'd just up and fall off the feeder but would always manage to catch himself with a front paw, whereupon he'd just climb back up and nonchalantly continue munching. Haven't seen him for a while since cold weather set in; so, he's probably no longer with us. We kind of miss the ol' guy.

'Nother squirrel observation: Squirrel politics.

This summer and fall a couple of the above mentioned local long-tails worked busily away burying walnuts in various locations in the back yard. In the aftermath of the recent Midwest Christmas snowstorm, I noticed squirrels of all shapes and sizes, virtually all able-bodied ones, out there in the snow drifts helping themselves to the fruits of the industrious long-tails' labors.

It suddenly occurred to me: "Good grief! Squirrels are LIBERALS."

In 2008, look for efforts by the Democratic National Party to enfranchise America's squirrels.

Sounds only fair since they insist on choosing squirrels for their candidate.

My squirrels are welfare recipients.  As long as I keep them on the dole, they will vote for me and my party.  Is there a moral here?

Hmmm...never thought of the impact of squirrels on politics.  But it makes sense...look at Richard Gephardt - we've been calling him "Squirrel Mouth" for years!

Shucks, I always thought squirrels would vote the Green Party  :-D !
Nader always looked a bit squirrely to me.
