I've not even dropped a round into it yet. For the most part we're having some pretty ugly weather. At least for us it's ugly. I'm an old fart who does nothing he don't have to if it's not fun. And it ain't fun for me in the weather we've been having.

I have got 200 rounds of ammo from Bruin one of our sponsors. It's in hand. I have some Buffalo Bore ammo on the way. Talked with Tim today. I've still got to call Hornady and get theirs on the way and some more bullets. I've got some cast bullets coming from Jim L. I'll load and will use some I cast also. I've got several different reloads sitting wating too.

But it ain't happening in ugly weather. When I was young I did stuff like that. But now that I'm old and fat I tend to do things I enjoy at times when enjoyment is possible.

My guess is when we get a couple warm days in January will like be first time out with it. Might happen this month. Dunno. Since my shooting partner died on me a few years back I have no one to twist my arm to get out in ugly weather.

Got no money for indoor range. Big time bucks. Small time income.

Wind chill down in single digits here and I'm in the south. High winds and cold air make GB stay inside mostly.

GB:

You really ought to spend more time watching reruns of Hogan's Heroes. If those guys could build a minor underground military base beneath a Nazi concentration camp without being detected, surely you can build a 500 yard range under Graybeard Manor.

It was -20F this morning here (air temp, not wind chill).  After we get acclimated, anything above zero seems kinda pleasant. If I drive with my dog and turn the heater on he starts panting when the temp inside the car gets up to about 40F.

OK so I'm a wuz. I've spent my entire life in Calhoun County, Alabama except for a short stint in Memphsis, TN in 1947 and a similarily short stint in Haines City, FL in 1958. When it dips below 40 it's cold to me. When the wind is blowing and the temp is in the 30s as it is today it's down right frigid and I don't stick my head out.

Iffen I built an underground range here it would be full of water 10 months a year and I'd have to swim to retrieve my targets. There is an underground river down on the front side of my property. The crawfish have holes all in down there and even in summer you can drop a rock in and hear the water splash just a short distance below the surface. The entire front half of my land is officially designated a flood plain.

What I need to do is build me a lake.

Actually, the coldest I've ever been (comfort-wise) was in the Florida keys and the hottest I've ever been was in Minnesota in early April.

The cold in GA, AL, AR, and southern MO is just incredibly bone chilling because of the humidity.  It doesn't get the notoriety it deserves. Here it's a dry cold and it's really not too bad unless the wind is blowing.  We're also set up for it.  I'd be inside too if it's the kind of cold I remember from a winter trip to AR.  There's more to "cold" than latitude. Just so we don't feel like total morons for living here, we Minnesotans make a macho thing out of the cold.

But generally, Minnesotans don't even have a faint understanding of how to deal with heat properly.  They don't understand how fans work or what windows really do. It's quite amusing, but it can be scary. A few years ago a lifelong Minnesotan (and highly educated) friend of ours collapsed with heat exhaustion. She didn't know how to handle a 100 degree day.

Actually Graybeard (how come it's not Greybeard?) doesn't have to go outside to write a glowing report about that Freedom Arms.  Just pick up the enclosed target and look at it.  What more can you say about a revolver that shoots a one hole cloverleaf group at 25 yds?  That group just says it all!  I love mine.  I've shot (in front of witnesses) a 2" group at 100 yds off the bench.  (2x B&L scope on it)  What could you possibly find to comment about?  Sides of the hammer are too shiney?  44 Man

I guess I could make an intelligent comment.  The grip angle on my FA83 is a little closer to a Bisley than a SAA or RBH.  I would prefer a grip closer to the colt, but I assume it works well with the hard kicking cartridges.  The 44 mag is pretty comfortable in this gun.  44 Man

It really is both.    As you can see this time I'm logged in as Greybeard. I own both domains also. If you plug in www.graybeardoutdoors.com you go directly to the home page. If you spell it www.greybeardoutdoors.com you get taken to the Forums Index. So we got it covered no matter which way you spell it gray or grey. Me I always spell it gray myself but use both.

You're right actually on the review. This is the third one Bob has sent me. First was the FA83 .454 Casull. Next the FA97 .45 Colt. I didn't scope the FA97 so groups didn't look as impressive in the review but they were strictly limited by my shooting ability and ability to see the sights not the guns capability. So I know exactly what to expect from this gun. Getting it as a review piece just saves me money when I buy it. I ordered it exactly the way I want it with full intentions of keeping it after the review. Had I just went to my dealer and ordered it I'd have to pay full price like anyone else. This way I get a writer's discount and we get to talk about it for months while I'm doing the review. Works well for everyone.

As to the grip, if it was more like the Colt I'd never have asked for the first one. For sure there would have been no second and this one would never have been made. To me it's better even than the Ruger Bisley grip which is light years ahead of the Colt for me. Maybe it's just been awhile and I've forgotten the first FA83 and how it felt in hand. But the grip on this one with Micarta grips feels decisively thicker than the .454 with the laminated wood did. Not sure yet which feel I like best. Shooting will tell

A friend of mine let me shoot his SBH with thinned grips.  He basically took the flare off from the screw hole down, then smoothed and rounded them so they looked normal, until you picked up the gun.  It was fantastic.  Great improvement!  I have since done that to most of my grips.  You should try it.  Of course to be truthful, I had a hard time taking a file to a pair of grips that cost well over a $100 so all I did to the FA grips was round the sharp edge at the bottom.  Then I ended up putting Pachmarye grips on it anyway for hunting.  Try it with a cheap pair of Ruger grips first but I think you will be impressed how thinned grips feel.  The guys on the Cowboy posts really like the gunfighter grips and they are just thinned grips.  If the grips feel too thick, you may not get the same hand placement you are used to.  44 Man

Will you give the FA a good cleaning before firing?

Yup and some judicious lubing too. But really in the case of mine I doubt it's really needed. They just built this one immediately before shipping it to me. IT was fired five times for test and group at FA and then shipped to me. Since it wasn't going into the normal distribution channels I doubt it got the same preservative treatment as they normally do. At least I can't see any evidence of it.

Still I'll pull cylinder and clean it and barrel and lube all proper lube points and put it back before firing it. I always do this with any new revolver.
