Need help deciding
« on: December 21, 2004, 12:39:04 PM »
I am thinking of buying a new DW revolver, specifically the 744.  Unfortunately I cant find any DW's around me to be able to handle and get a feel for.

They clearly look like "Smiths", which would be a great thing if they felt like Smiths.  Is there any comparison to the way they feel in comparison to an N frame?  Is grip angle and orientation similar?

I had orignally wanted to get an Anaconda but it just doesnt feel right in my hand, but I like the idea that the strength of the Anaconda is greater than a 629.  Apparently the DW's are very strong too.

Also,  Are they in danger of going out of business again?  I would like to get extra barrel lengths eventually and am concerned about the lack of availability of the DW's.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dan Wessons are quite a bit larger than a 629.  They are more in the Ruger Redhawk class.  However, the monogrip design on all Dan Wessons means there are a wider variety of grip configurations than for any other revolver.  You can also customize it to a greater degree than any other.  You should be able to make one feel like you want.  Once you fire a 629 and a 744 side by side with heavy loads, you will never even think about a 629 again.  744's are MUCH easier to control.

Dan Wessons are arguably the strongest most durable 44 mag available.  You will not wear one out.

With the 45 auto business taking off, I don't think they will be going out of business anytime soon.  They are still selling new revolvers and new parts.  Even if they went out of business tomorrow, there will always be spare barrels for sale on the used market.  There are almost always spare barrels on sale on the auction sites.

Used Dan Wessons are a great deal as are used barrels.  I buy most of mine that way.

Hope that helps.
