The local Wally World has a Savage model 11FXP3 in .243(with the accutrigger) for 350 bucks.  This comes with some kind of cheap scope I'm sure, but how is the rifle itself?

Lots of post on the Savages already in the forums.  Good rifles at a low price......politically incorrect for some but I really like mine.......

MY dad has two savages, a 10FP .308 and a 110 .270, the .270 is like magic to me, everything Ive pointed it at has dropped instantly. they are not as pretty as others, but they do what they are intended to do.

My three Savages are my favorite rifles for hunting and range work and the looks have grown on me to the point I think my Savage rigs are aesthetically pleasing. The fact that they are not expensive makes it possible for me to add the occasional rifle to the cabinet without the need to declare Chapter 11. Accuracy is superb with or without handloads and the Accutrigger is an excellent trigger that requires no smithing to make it useable. Granted the Simmons are not high end optics but I have still found them to be serviceable for many duties. Given my positive experiences with the Simmons, I suspect that a considerable number of the complaints about them are the result of self-inflicted problems. Human tendency seems to be that the higher the price, the more care and maintenance the item will receive.

Safe shooting.

Good, VERY accurate rifles for the price.  I've got a .30-06 110 (pre-Accutrigger) that will do sub-MOA.  There are a few plastic parts (trigger guard and mag follower), but that's the case even with more expensive rifles now and if you like metal aftermarket versions are available from Brownells.  The scopes that come with the packages aren't that great, but as I've said before, the Savage + scope is still usually cheaper than most other brands without (and it seems that the package rifle with the scope isn't more expensive than the Savages without scopes).  Just kinda ignore the scope as a freebie that you'll replace.  You'd have to get a new one on the other rifles that don't come with a scope anyways.  Heck even though I wouldn't trust it on my .30-06 the dinky scope that came on mine is doing fine on a .22 of mine.  Works a lot better than the $15 air-rifle scopes most people seem to use on .22's.

VAhuntr, make sure its not the youth model. a friend went to look at one at Dick's when they had the savage packages on sale for $329, but their 243s were all youth models.

they didn't realize it until I pointed out the "Y" in the model# on the box.

VAhuntr,

They are listed under the package models at the Savage web site.  Excellent, accurate rifles with a low cost Bushnell or Simmons scope.  Best part is if the scope doesn't work out, you have saved enough to buy a better scope.  Lawdog

After I had already posted my question, I found several threads concerning the Savage rifles.  Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate them.  One more question though.  How does the accutrigger actually work?  Seems I have read that it takes some getting used to.  Is it like a Glock?  To me the Savage is not really that ugly.  There are other rifles that look better,  but I could really care less what a rifle looks like as long as it will shoot.  If I like how the gun shoots I will probably get rid of the scope and opt for something better.

Feels just like a military two stage trigger.  You have a take up which essentially takes the saftey off and then it goes bang - no creep - very crisp.  If you like an M1 (which I happen to love) you will love the accutrigger.

I'm with MGMorden on this one.  Not sure why Savage puts out these package deals, I guess to get first time buyers.  Nothing at all wrong with any of the Savage rifles, especially if they have the accu-trigger.  Probably the most accurate rifles out of the box for less than $1000.  The scopes....well they are cheap, bottom of the line stuff.  OK to get started with but would not count on one working for too long.  Take it off, put it on a 22 rimfire or just put it back for a spare and get a decent scope.  Plenty available in the $100 to $150 range.  Check out the optics forums for their recommendations.
