Thoughts on the 350 Remington Magnum ???
« on: December 18, 2004, 09:40:54 AM »
I've always been kind of been intrigued by the 350 Rem. Mag. I like the ballistics of it, especially in a light rifle. What do you guys think?

I'm looking at two different models. Both are from the custom shop at Remington.

I have and use a .35 Whelen.  Ballistically, they are pretty much identical.  I'm not sure I'm all that enamoured with a carbine length magnum.  Just not necessary in my opinion but I'm not the one who's carrying it.  I like my .45-70 carbine for brush hunting and I don't spend a lot of time at the bench with it!

If you buy the .350 you will shoot it a little and carry it a lot.  I'm kind of a shoot it a lot kind of guy so, I like my rifles a little longer and a little heavier.  But the cartridge is a thumper and I'd use it agin a bear anyday.

New York,
A few years ago I had a 700 Classic in 350 mag.  It was a handfull to shoot, and it was a pound or so heavier than the 7 MS.
If you get one and scope it, make sure you get a scope with plenty if eye relief.
The MS looks like a neat little rifle to carry and hunt with.  But, it probably wouldn't be much fun to shoot off of a bench.
Best,

This round was pretty much ahead of it's time when it was first introduced, and Remington has tried to resurect it recently with the shortmag craze.  Other than that, if it's a cartridge you like, which you seem to indicate, then that's a different story.

I have never shot this cartridge, but I have shot a .35 whelen which, as previously stated, is about the same - and that's a lot.  It really must be a handful in the lighter M7, but what elk medicine it would make! :)

I'm also looking at the model 673. I don't know if I can get over the "vent rib" though. It weighs 7 1/2 lbs. so it should soke up a little more recoil then the model Seven's. If I get the 673 I'll put a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm scope on it. It weighs 12 oz, and has 4.7 inches of eye relief on 3 power and 3.7 inches on 9 power. If I get the a model Seven of some sort I'll probably go with a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm scope. It weights 10.5 oz. and has 4.9 inches of eye relief on 2 power and 3.8 inches on 7 power. The model 673 is a "standard production" rifle. Both the model Seven's are from the "custom shop". The model 673 will cost a lot less. I really don't know if I can get over the "vent rib"! But I really like the 350 Remington Magnum.

Heres the model 673

New York Hunter,

When Remington first came out with the .350 I was working in a sporting goods store an sold a few to locals that though they would be great for the brush.  Quite a few brought them back and traded them in on other rifles as the muzzle blast was bad and that vented rib caught on every twig it came in contact with.  Personally the .350 Remington does much better with a 24" barrel as does it ballistic twin the .35 Whelen.  Lawdog

I just got back from the range, I was shooting my new ruger MKll in .350 rem mag. and it does have pretty good recoil. I'm sure the model 7 would get your attention. I have heard good reports on the rem 673, I'm told they are good shooters. If you don't like the vent rib just take it off. If you handload the .350 is very versatile and you could load it down a bit. Shooting at game you wouldn't notice the recoil as much. Good Luck

How bad is the recoil? Is it more then a 12 ga. with slugs or more then a 444 Marlin?

Can I take it off or is it welded or soldered on? If I can take it off I'll get the 673 instead of a model Seven. Actually I would rather have it in a "bigger rifle" if you know what I mean!

Recoil, ballistics and such
« Reply #8 on: December 19, 2004, 02:21:42 PM »
New York Hunter,
Recoil is a personal perception. It is true that too much impairs one's ability to finely aim a rifle for long range shooting.
I remember when I was a kid Remington had this caliber in a light weight rifle (my buddy had a 600 I believe) that did not sell because of the recoil. I would caution a shooter against getting the .350 Rem Mag in a rifle under 7 1/2 to 8 lbs. I have a .375H&H in a 9 lb rifle and a .338 Winchester Magnum in an 8 1/2 lb rifle. I would not want lighter with either. I shoot these at 200 and 300 yards, and probably could tolerate a lighter rifle in either if my shooting was limited to 100 yards.

It is gonna kick!! And be loud. But it will do the job.!!! Kick is much more like a 12 gauge slug in a light pump as opposed to a 444 marlin. They shoot though. Ammo seems to be exspensive. My buddy has an old remington carbine in one and he uses it on everthing from antelope on the prairie, deer in river bottoms, elk in the timber to bear over bait. Uses factory core loc 200 grains He swears by it. He has a 4x leopold on his. Twigs in the rib once in the while annoying but dealable. Sorry for the disjointed answer. My I ask why this caliber? Is it the gun or the cartridge?

I have a remington model 660 in 350 remington mag with a 2.5x scout scope.  You can't ask for a more pleasant gun to carry nor a more accurate set up.  I really like this set up.  The 660 doesn't have the funny vent rib.  Unfortunately, you rarely find these.  If you do, grab it.

P.S.   This cartridge is very pleasant to shoot and in the 660 with a scout scope is the quickest combo I've ever used

Well I have a "Ithaca Deerslyer" 12 ga. shotgun, its extremely light! Its not the most comfortable gun to shoot, but I can tolerate it!

I've always been an "odd ball cartridge kind of guy". I bought a 25-06 Rem. and then a 280 Rem. when most people were getting a 270 Win. or a 30-06 Spr. I got a 35 Rem over a 30-30 Win. I also have a 356 Win. that I don't use because I don't care for the Winchester model 94. I'd love to have a 356 Win. in a Marlin! I went with a 444 Mar. instead of the 45-70 Gov. I was going to get a 6mm Rem. instead of a 243 Win. I never got either! I really wanted a Remington model 700 "Classic" in 8mm Rem. Mag. but I didn't have the money at the time. When I saw the custom shop model Seven in 350 Rem. Mag. a few years ago it just caught my eye! I don't need it, not at all. I'd probably never use it for hunting unless I went out of state. I don't know......some people are addicted to crack.......I'm addicted to guns I don't need!

The Remington Custom Shop will also chamber the Model 7 AWR in .350 Rem Mag.  I hunt the Adirondacks and have been considering this set up myself.

I had Bullberry build a 350 for an encore. I had it built with a brake and only 21" barrel. It is real pleasent to shoot off of a bench and shoots really well with factory but will reloade the 225 Northfork.
