I was looking at one of these the other day in 223, a very nice looking rifle. Are the very accurate out of the box or do they require some work?

I've owned two or three of them I guess now. Never had one yet that wouldn't go 1/2" or better out of box with a few selected loads they liked. Hard to make one shoot a group over an inch at 100 yards no matter what you feed them.

while we're on the subject.......

got one heck of a deal on one last weekend. it was posted on the board at work for a couple weeks. got intersted when the price began dropping. seller needed funds to pay off an antique rifle he had on 'hold'.

22-250, LNIB, only 15rds fired.
burris rings, tasco world class 10x40x50 scope with 2 lens shades.
trigger tune by local smithy.

$450

haven't fired it yet, planning to this morning if I can get to the range before the snow starts.

I dunno. Good but not great price for rifle. Personally I'd place no value on the scope. But then that's the way I am. The original Tasco WC scopes especially the 6-24 was a nice scope it really was. I think the 8-32 was but I never owned one as I saw no practical value in more thann 24X. I was seldom able to use that maginfication due to mirage. But the 10-40? Dunno. What generation is that? Current or just before the fold up of Tasco? If the latter it likely should be replaced. If current it might be an OK scope as Bushnell is now behind them.

yes, I know its just a tasco and that I probably won't be using it at over 20x. the scope isn't what swayed me to buy. if the rifle proves worthy, I'll probably upgrade. the scope is an older model. a member of another board has asked me about selling the scope.

I was considering another bench rifle, and when the price dropped, I figured 'Merry CHRISTmas to me!'

I did get it to the range yesterday morning for a tryout.

results weren't bad considering the cold and windy conditions, and the 'budget' ammo. not much premium stuff available locally.

used win USA 45gr varmint load and win SuperX 55grSP.

2 best groups were 3/4". top one 45gr, bottom SuperX

I might order some Hornady Custom ammo to try.
also considering making it a "free-floated" barrel. the stock channel has that 'raised spot' at the front swivel. but I won't touch the stock until after I test some other ammo.

also took my Savage 10FP 223 to the range.

that 'tupperware' stocked rifle shot its usual 5 shot 1/2" group with Black Hills Match 68gr.

By all means try the Hornady Custom. That is some of the most accurate ammo you can find. Most of my rifles even in big game calibers shoots it well under an inch. When you find the ammo it likes it will shoot under 1/2" most likely. Mine sure have.

thanx,Bill.

question about the stock. this is my first wood stocked rifle. I was surprised(disappointed?) that the stock didn't have aluminum or steel pillars for the action mounting bolts.

is that normal?   is the torque spec still 60-65 in/lbs?

chip, sorry to hijack your thread, but at least I'm asking VLS related questions.

nipprdog - with better loads you can get that group down quit a bit. Do not be afraid of that stock. I had the same rifle and was shooting Gold Dot ammo in it. My groups were all like your 10FP target. I also just purchased a 10FP LE1 in a 308. I hope it shoots as good as your 223 10FP. And I will also tell you that the Super Sniper Scope (10X) is nothing to hold back from. It is probably the best scope I have ever owner. So there are some Tasco scopes out there that are good ones. I think people are getting into the idea that a different stock will make a big difference on a weapon - some - it might - but as your 10FP shows - why in the world would you want to change that stock(its pillar beaded) to something different. That is a great groups. I would think I was in heaven if I could "every" get a groups like that at 4 to 5 hundred yards. My max distance is 500 yards and the reason my 10FP is a 308. Love seeing those 10FP shoot so well out of the box.   :D

coyote, not afraid of the stock at all. and I certainly don't want to change from that pretty stock.

I was just surprised by the lack of pillar bedding, not knowing if that made any difference on wood stocks-- particularly on torque settings.

not to hi-jack again, but since you mentioned your LE1,

mine is on the left.

chip, is the one you saw one of the 'Varminter' models with the thumbhole stock?  I've seen a few of these lately at a couple shops, but can't find them on remmy's web site.

Coyote,  My 10FP .308 amazes me every time I shoot it. It would shoot 1/2" or better right out of the box. I've since added a B&C stock, bedded the bbl full length, and worked the trigger over a little.  The best load I've found for this particular rifle is a 168 gr. SMK over 43.6 gr. of IMR4895,CCI BR2 primer, OAL 2.865.   Look at the results in the GB album. For some reason I couldnt get the pic to stick on this post.Thats 3 shots @ 100 yds from a solid bench. The pictured group is the best its done for me but I think its the only time I've shot it when there was no wind.

Happy Holidays to all :toast: [/img]
Please write me off of GB outdoors, I do not want to be a part of it any more.
