just wondering if anyone had ever seen or owned one. it is a leveraction copy of the marlin 336. the one i have was passed down to me from my granddaddy. on the side of the barrel it says something like "westernfield by montgomery wards". anyway, with just about any 170gr. factory ammo it will shoot 1-1.25" groups at 100 yards. it is a killer.

It's not a copy of a Marlin, I believe it is a Marlin, made by Marlin for Wards to sell under their own brand name, Western Field.  Lots of gun companies used to make guns for Sears and Wards to sell through their catalogs and such.  So, yes, lots of us have owned one, it just had something else stamped on the side.

It sounds like it's a good one, especially with the family history behind it.

Leverfan is correct, it's a real Marlin.  The contract guns simply came with a rougher finish to the metal and a "hardwood" stock rather than walnut.
