Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I always get good advice from you bolt gun shooters, so I thought I would post here.

I need to purchase a new chronograph. The basic ProChrono I have is on the fritz.

I have been looking at PACT, Shooting Chrony, and Oehler Model 35. I am not opposed to paying up to $225 (Oehler), if it is better.

I will use this chrono primarily for load development and some archery tuning.

I think I would prefer a read out unit that sits on the bench rather than an all in one, but I am open to suggestions. Also, at this time, I don't need accessories such as printers, etc., nor do I need one to compute elaborate statistical data. My main priorities in the unit would be accuracy and dependability.

No reason to spend anymore than $50 on a refurbished F1 Shooting Chrony, but an F1 Master with the remote readout is under $100.

I have a Chrony with a printer. It works good for my use.

I have the Shooting Chrony F1 master, the one with the remote readout. It has about a 20' cable so you can set the read out on the bench. That way you don't have to get up to see what it says, etc. I think I paid about $75 or so for it. Seems plenty adequate for me. I don't need all the computer stuff. I can figure the ES, etc if I want to. Works just fine for what I need.

My Oehler is nearly 20 yrs old but I still like it a lot and I can still get good service for it. Last winter I needed some new screen stand parts and light bulbs for indoor work and they got them to me pronto. At a reasonable price.

I use and recommend the Oehler 35P. It really is better. Yeah the cheaper ones work some times, some times they don't. They're never as accurate but perhaps accurate enough for your needs.

You set up an Oehler 35P and a Shooting Chrony that sells for $75, OK. Then shoot thru both.....you get slightly different readings.......I guess the Oehler would be more accurate because it costs more? Come on now.....you are like the man with 2 watches.......he never knows what the exact time is. :wink:

The Oehler 35P has three screens. They are more widely spaced than most other brands. It checks time from screen #1 to #2 and from #2 to #3 as well as from #1 to #3. It bumps all of this against each other and only if all are within a fixed percentage of same will it call the reading valid. Othewise it lets you know the reading is most likely in error. No other brand does this. And they all give false readings from time to time. I've found I get a lot less with the Oehler than any of the other brands I've used.

Yes the Oehler uses most sophisticated electronics and is more accurate. Enough to matter? That each person has to decide for themselves.

I use and favor the Oehler 35P also. However, I believe that the screens work a bit differently than stated.

Screen #1 starts the clocks
Screen#2 stops the first timer
Screen #3 stops the second timer

On the printout, the first proof reading is the speed between the #1 to #2 screens. The second reading on the printout is the actual speed which is the recorded speed as measured between the 1st and 3rd screens. The Oehler 35 measures all shots twice and compares the relative velocity differences for indications of erroneous readings as you stated.

Looks like Graybeard and I are going to agree on something again. I am on my second Oehler 35P as my son proved they won't stand up to a .32 auto. Again you get what you pay for. Lawdog

I use the Pact Mk 4 championship timer w/printer. It not only has the chronograph but also a trajectory function and gives me trajectory and remaining velocity out to 1000yds in 25 yard increments. May go farther and in smaller increment's, haven't tried. It also figures out max point blank range or you can insert your own zero range and it'll figure everything out for you. My house burned down a couple years ago and I took it apart and cleaned it up and it still works fine. Think I'll stick with it!

I myself am looking at the 35P. It may be more expensive, but I have come to the conclusion that it is well worth it.

Shooting Chrony no longer sells refurbished units. Just talked to them today.
