Lightweight scope bases and rings
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:30:01 PM »
Any recommendations for a set of lightweight rings and bases for a Model 70 (in Silver color)?  I'm putting a Bushnell 3200 on on a MR M1999 action.

First why the hang up on LIGHT? The rifle is no feather weight in the truest sense or what's 3-4 oz one way or another and that's about all even heavy ones weight.

But about the lightest combination I know of is Weaver two piece base and Tasco Aluminum rings. If you put them on and leave them and don't ever take them off the Tasco rings work pretty well. They are not for taking on and off tho. I use them once and toss them. Or I shoud say I did. No longer use them. Now I use Burris Signature rings almost always.

You're probably right, GB.  I do want to save a bit of weight where I can, but maybe the rings and bases are not suitable choices.  I'll look into the Burris rings.  Why do you like them so well?

The action is actually a Montana Rifleman SA with a 20 inch #2 contour barrel.  The action is modeled after the 70 in the scope base mount area. As well, I'm still searching for a stock to finish it off.  I'm leaning towards laminate for the looks though not the lightest choice.

The Burris Signature Rings have plastic inserts which protect your scope. With them you don't need to lap the rings to protect scope. But depending on what base you chose you still may need to use an alignment bar. The only bases I use if available are the Burris Double Dove Tail or Leupold dual dovetail. I use Burris signature double dovetail rings either way. If this combination is not available I use Weaver Bases and Burris Signature Zee Rings.

With any twist in base/ring like the dual or double dove tail you must use an alignment bar even with signature rings. But if you use the signature rings you don't have to follow it up by lapping. If you use Weaver base and singature  Z rings you don't need to use alignment bar or lap.
