New 45-70 barrel for my G2
« on: December 13, 2004, 08:46:36 AM »
I recieved my 23'' 45-70 barrel Friday from Midsouth. I sighted it in yesterday. I really like this rifle. I beleive it is going to be my favorite rifle. It is a lot lighter than my 300 WSM. I was not thinking when I sighted it in and it whacked me in the nose on the first shot.  I'm going bear hunting this Saturday with it. I hope the bears are not hiding in their dens. I got something to give them. 300 grain Federal should whack'em pretty good.

I forgot all about the 45-70 for a contender carbine....I was going to get the 300 winmag or 7mm mag for my encore.  How do you think the 45-70 compares?  I'm looking for an excuse to turn my contender pistol into a rifle set-up.  Like all of the other addicts on this site, I am sure I will end up getting one of each though
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I would not be bothered by taking a 200 yard shot with the grand ole 45-70. So range will never be a problem for me as my average shots are less than 100 yards. I think it has the ability to drop deer just as fast as the big magnums if the shot is placed well. Especially if using one of the 300 hollow points. I do know one thing the G2 in 45-70 is the recoiling gun I have at the moment. The very first shot sighting it in suprised me and the scope hit me on the bridge of my nose. But, that is alright because I'll just be more careful. I like big bores.

Jeff, I'm shooting factory Federal loads. 300 JHP's. My TC G2 feels like it is about a 1 1/2 lighter than my 243 Ultra. I might have to weight it, the recoil is not bad on the shoulder but it jumps when shooting off the bench. I have had guns that recoil hard on the shoulder but this one just jumps more.
