CZ..........GOOD NEWS..........CAN'T WAIT
« on: December 12, 2004, 06:13:27 AM »
Just found out that in July or August CZ is coming out with a lightweight, 6.5 lb, in 6.8 cal.  This should put an end to the debate about which rifle is best for White Tail.

CZ, in the 6.8mm?     Good rifle bad cartridge but there is hope, it can be rechambered for something useful!!!    The 6.8 is no more then the .30 Remington necked to .277 or for those not familiar with the .30 Rem, about like a 30-30 necked down to .277, not much of an improvement in either case.
There is no such thing as over kill!!!!  :-)

Well, I did see where CZ is making a new rifle here in the US especially for the short mgs.  It looks alot like a model 70, and is reportably a well put together rifle.  I think it's about a $700 dillar gun.

I somewhat agree with you, razmuz.  While I'll be on the list for two of them (one for my son and one for me), I don't know that I could consider it the "best" for whitetail.  But, deer ballistics out to 250-260 yards and less recoil than a .243 in a comparable rifle will certainly be hard to knock.

I fear that's asking more from it than it can deliver. Bullet weights are to be very near same as you'd use in a .243 but with less velocity and a lower BC. So performance on game at those ranges should actually be less than the .243. I'd rather hit them with a 95 Nosler PT or 100 anything in .243" than a 110/115 grain .277" bullet. Especially when the .277 starts  slower.

Isn't it great we can all disagree?   I think the biggest weakness of the .243 Winchester is and always will be the limitation to a 100 grain bullet.

The 6.8 Rem SPC gives you the same energy (ft pounds) as the .243, but with a 120 grain bullet, and a better sectional density than the .243.  (All with the trajectory of the .308 Winchester).  Specs seem pretty close to the .257 Roberts, but again with a better sectional density.

For deer, give me the 6.8 Rem SPC over the .243 Winchester any day  :-).

Check out the online hunting article regarding the First Look at the 6.8 Remington.  The author had no trouble dumping a large Mulie at a pretty good distance.

I love it.  Everybody has an opinion...or personal preference.  Thats why I read your posts.  That's why there are so many calibers.   It would be pretty dull if everyone shot a .30-30 lever gun.   My favorite new caliber is a 6.5 Swede.  Its only been around about 100 years.  Since I started shooting it last year I have not shot my 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, or 270.  It can't take the place of my muzzle loader or .223.  You can see I like the calibers that are tried and true.  Ballistically I can't see how the 6.8 will be an improvement over the old 6.5 Swede.  I had to add my $.02. :D

I agree with you that the 6.8 Rem will not beat the ballistics of the old 6.5 Swede.  But what is exciting about it is:

   1.  It is a short action round, that will make for great short action hunting carbines in .27 caliber, that will give you a meaningful step up from the .243 Winchester, without resulting in more muzzle blast or recoil.  An accurate, short, .257 Roberts type round, in factory loaded 120 grain.

    2.  Just my opinion: It solves the current 5.56 military round problem!

     3.  I also think this will make a real nice single shot rifle round.

Just my opinions only.

Right on, no improvement over the Swede, and no improvement over the .257 Roberts either. And NO way is the military ever going to adopt it as a new service round. I too like the old tried and true. Betcha won't even be able to find ammo for this newest wonder-round 5 years from now. There's my :money:

Big Paulie, explain to me how a .277, 120gr bullet can have a better sectional density than a 120gr, .257 bullet? Thanks, Byron

pastorp,

Ooops!  you are right. I computed wrong.  I was not thinking about handloaded 120 grain rounds, but only the factory stuff.  I also forgot that someone makes a 119 grain factory load for the .257, which is danged close to the 120 grain weight.
