Holy white Moose!
« on: December 10, 2004, 05:25:33 PM »
Saw a picture someone took of a pure white moose in the local fish/hunt paper.  Ive heard of white deer, but never moose before.  Real funny looking too.  Anyone else ever heard of this?  Bet the guy who took the pic had one heck of a story to tell  :) .

Hay New Hampshire:  There are recognized herds (both ov 'em) of Albino Whitetail - one herd in New York at the old Seneca Army Depot (quite a large area) and another that is supposed to be in Pennsylvania.  I would think that if there are albino whitetail there should be something similar in Moose.  Was the picture you saw in color?  Did it show pink eyes or a pink nose, or was it just white fur?????  Mikey.

Yes it was a color photo.  But the moose is far enough away in the pic as well as surronded by a few trees and shrubs that I cant tell if its got pink eyes, and the nose I cant really tell.  All I know is that it is head to toe white ith no spots of discoloration or anything.  Its really neat lookin.

Haven't seen white moose, but I have seen an albino buck and a partial albino doe, both whitetails, in southern Indiana.  The buck was at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Martin County and the doe was about 15 miles away in Lawrence county.  There have also been local newspaper articles of albino whitetail located at the Springmill State Park in Lawrence county.  I saw the doe during shotgun season, but didn't have a doe permit..dang it :( .  I've seen some albino squirells in the area as well.

we have white squirrels here too and black ones as well but I have a "white" raccoon.  We treed it a few years ago near Kirksville MO with three others and at first thought it was a possum; but could see the tail rings so we shot him out.  The color pattern is sort of pinkish tan where the black color normally would be and white on the rest of him.  The eyes and nose were normal color.  No one I've talked with has ever seen one marked this way.  He's now watching us from a spot near the ceiling of our deer hunting cabin.

We have an area with all black squirrels here.            BigBill

Didn't someone shoot a white deer once recently?  I read a post somewhere about it.  I'm not sure if I would shoot a white deer or any albino their special.

I seem to remember reading in the Iowa hunting rulebook that white deer are protected there.  FWIW.
