.54 T/C Renegade and Roundballs
« on: December 09, 2004, 12:48:37 PM »
A little advice is needed.  My Renegade is shooting curveballs at 100 yards.  I have a musket cap nipple and get great results with the 435 gr. maxiballs and 120grs. of Pyrodex.  My problem is that I am sentimental and want to shoot roundballs and I have lots of them.  What is the proper load for my .54 Renegade to shoot roundballs accurately?  I believe the twist in my barrel is 1 in 48.

YOU DIDNT SAY HOW THICK YOUR PATCHES ARE BUT YOU MIGHT TRY A THICKER PATCH. IN MY .50CAL. THE THICKEST SEEM TO SHOOT MOST ACCURATE.

Three things that have helped me before...

a pillow ticking patch
back down to a 80-90 grain charge
Goex 2F blackpowder

:-)
hi! tom van:
my renegade loves .530 rb .018 lubed patch and 75 gr. of 3fg goex.  i shoot mostly paper but @ 50 yds. this load will under 1.25 inch, if i was to try 100 yds. i would bump it up to 80 gr. but read your patch, and might be able to go higher.
rb's always seem to shoot better with real bp goex or swiss.  try it and i think you will like it!
if its worth doing, finish it!

charlie45 gave you about the right advise for that gun.
If you wanna shoot rb proper, you'll need to go to loose powder and use a measure,,5grains +/-  in powder charge or .01 in patch thickness can make a big difference. I have NEVER seen pyro pellets shoot rb in a favorable manner.(period)

Much too RCL's shagrin I'm sure,,,but  all pillow ticking is not the same. "pillow ticking" is not the answer. Now, if yer shooting maxiball and have good results, how are those maxi lubed? What do you do "between" shots? What kind of maxi? How many shot's do you make to determine accuracy or not?
SEE? I can shoot PRB about 60 tymes per day and change 4 variables other than powder to determine the best accuracy for my gun.(then I experiment with powders):).
luck too ya, share sum more if ya want ,,we'll help :D

TomVan I have a Renegade in 54 but it a flinter, seem to favor 3f goex over any other powder. My t/c love the REALS 380 grains with 85 to 90 grains of powder and a wonder wad.I am going to try RB this year in the t/c ,what you can also try before you seat the patch RB try sending a wonder wad down over the powder first. :D

if you go to black powder you will need to wipe between shots.. use tight jag/ patch combo with  1/4 murphy soap oil and 3/4 water if not under freezing. use same amount of wipe lube, use same amount of lube on your pillow tick patch, all has to be the same.. make sure all the fouling is out of the barrel. before you put in the next ball.  then pack the powder the same with same pressure on ball for better accuracy.  good luck dave..

Try this:

80-90grns Goex FFFg (3F)
.58cal Oxyoke wonderwad (yes, 58cal)
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking patch
Hornady or Speer .530 ball
"Flintlocks.......The Real Deal"
(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

Lotsa variables involved, but I'd suggest that you make sure you are using a good tough patch material that loads kinda tight.  Then, set up a bunch of targets and shoot three or four shots at each.  Start the first targ at about 50 gr of powder and go up 10 grains on each target.  Wipe after every shot!!  You will be able to see when accuracy improves or goes south.  Study your patch material after each target (pick em up so you know after each target that they are the fresh ones).  If your patching starts to blow out, you are over max for that powder/patch combo.  The search for roundball accuracy is to a large extent a search for good quality patch material.  I always see answeres to questions like yours including a certain thickness of patch, eg. .015, .018, etc.  My advice is don't bother to measure it.  If it loads tight, but you are indeed able to load it, then try it.  If it blows out it's probably due to quality of material, not thickness.

I bought two swatches of identical lokking pillow tick at wal mart last summer.  One swatch red the other blue.  One blows out one doesn't.  they both feel the same when loaded.  Once you find a really great patch material, go buy all of it :) .  Many shooters fret over lube, but I'll suggest that once you find a good patch material, it will shoot good with almost any lube
