Short S&W 500 Velocity

Hi All,
Has anyone chronographed a 4" S&W 500 and compared it to the longer barreled versions?  I was wondering how much speed was lost due to the shorter barrel.  There are some "rules of thumb" about fps/inch, but I thought someone might have actually measured it.

i havent idea what it cronos but i saw my first one today and its a handful
but im waiting on the alaskan by ruger to be available here

I hope Ruger didn't pull one of their stunts and advertise the Alaskan months before it may become available to you.  Looks like it might be a neat packing gun.

Yesterday I traded my 83/4 S&W 500 for the 4" model. I love the little one! I shot sixty rounds thru it today.Its more managable than the long one!And accurate too.

    I shot the 440 hard cast over the chrono today at 1450fps.The box says 1625fps.

  My light loads 350 sierra out of 83/4 barrel 1600fps.
 Today out of the 4" barrel 1425fps.

So it seems 175fps is what you lose.

Thanks for the info.  440g @ 1450 fps should handle anything walking.  And, a 350g @ 1425 fps ain't no slouch for a plinking load. :lol:
175 fps isn't a bad trade for an easier packing gun...still plenty of punch.

I looked at one close yesterday, however it appearded to me that the barrel is only 3 inchs as the compensator is not rifled.  Am I figureing it wrong?

Don,
Because the compensator is part of the barrel, the barrel is actually 4" long.  But, because the rifled portion is 3" your only getting 3" of "push".
I guess that's true of any compensated barrel.  Once you get to the holes, all the horsepower goes out the sides and top.

I got a 4 inch S&W500 today. I got it for a great price. It was only shot 5 times and the person said it was to much for them. I pick up the gun for $700 and 5 boxes of Corbon factory ammo for another $75.00. I shot the gun at 15 yards with open sights and I did a 5 shot group the measured about 1 inch. The gun shoots like a dream.

Redhawk,
I know that I am not supposed to be jealous, but your story is really getting to me.  Seriously, congrats on the great deal.  I already own a Dan Wesson 445 supermag with a 4" compensated barrel (a true 4" barrel, over 5" with the compensator), but I am really tempted to get one of those 500 S&W "snubnose" guns.  If I saw one at that price, I would probably get the shakes or something.  I think I am going to wait a little while to see what the endurance of the small 500's turns out to be.  If there are no reports of them shaking loose over time (which I don't really anticipate), I will probably eventually end up with one.

I went to the gun shop just to pick up powder. My dealer told me of the deal that he just took the call on and I was the first person he asked. 2 hours later I had the gun in hand and went into the range and fired it. I just can't pass up a deal like that.  :D

Congrats on your super deal.  I suspect if some members want a S&W 500 they might just want to keep checking with their local dealers.  There will probably be some "barely" used ones showing up. :-D  
One turned up the other day at one of our local shops as a trade-in.  The owner said he only shot it twice and his nieghbor shot it twice.  Somebody is going to get a good deal on this one.

8) Dog Breath,  Which one of the compensators did you use.  The one for jacketed, or the longer one for cast bullets.  If you used both, could you tell any difference ?  Thanks

I had one of the 4 inch 500`s follow me home tonight.  It was 858 new.
Not a great deal but my 8 3/8`s needed a little brother.  Now if I can just find a PC500 my family will be complete.

You guys are killing me.  I want a S&W 500 4" bad but I can't use it for hunting here in NY as the actual barrel length minus the brake is 3".  NY conservation law states the barrel must be 4".  I have asked several COs and their interpretations varied.  One said it won't be allowed, another said if the brake is fixed so it can't be removed it will then pass and another said HE wouldn't write someone up for using it but it doesn't mean someone else wouldn't.  Sooo, I'm stuck waiting for S&W to offer a shorty 500 with a 4" barrel and 1" muzzlebrake or cutting back an 8 3/8" one.  I don't like the performance center versions.  Kindof stuck now. :cry:

Redhawk1, how do you like the shorty as compared to your BFR?

Give SSK a call and they can cut the longer one to the lenght you want.  I don't think it will cost you that much to have this done.

Ravenwolf, I think I actually like it more than the BFR. I had the 8 3/8 barreled S&W500 but did not like it as much as my BFR. There is just something about the look and feel of the 4 inch over the 8 3/8 inch. Now I do like both my BFR and S&W500. I am going to do a good  comparison for accuracy to see which one goes to Maine on my black bear hunt as my main weapon. So far I am leaning toward the S&W500.  :D
