atvstunter,

Are you planning on just shooting penny size targets,  hunting small game with this or just pest reduction?  The reason I ask is the .17 HMR sure tears up small game and isn't suited for any pests larger than say 12 - 15 pounds.  Lawdog

i,m hoping to fill those needs with a contender carbine barrel in .17m2. they are suposed to be more accurate than the .17hmr. also cheaper, and quieter! and almost recoilless.

I'd go with the 17 HMR. In the right gun, they are extremely accurate. I haven't seen one yet but have serious doubts the 17m2 will be strong enough to make sure kills out beyond 50 yards. I shoot a lot of prarie dogs in the warmer months and have used my 17HMR on closer shot (<100 yards) and have seen some body hit PD's crawl back down the hole. Some do come all to pieces but not all. I'd say if you are shooting something in the ground squirrel size out no farther  than 50 yards, the 17M2 would be a fun round to go with....
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

I really like the .22lr. It is cheep, fun, quite, recoiless and you can become pretty deadly with the round. I do not hunt out side of 50 years with it though. Another plus is, there is tons of ammo types for it.

On the same page, there is alot to be said about the .17HMR, .17M2 and the .22MAG. I still like the .22lr the best because it not much loader then a bbgun, I like to shoot at night. The .17M2 would do the job too, about the same as the .22lr, and the .22lr is still cheeper. I still would not go past 50 yards with either one though.

If noise is not a issue, I would go .22MAG, or .17HMR

i read an article, cant remember what mag. but in a side bar, Dieter Anschutz, said that the .17 m2 was the most accurate commercially sold rimfire cartrige, he had ever worked with! and i own both the m-2 and hmr, and have to agree! the m2 does shoot better groups than the hmr. (at 50yds) i realize that this is only two barrels, so, i'll take mr. anschutz's word for it!
