In 1981 before stainless /synthetic rifles were common on the shelf, I had HS make me one in 300 win mag. Back then they would blue print a Rem 700 action, install their own barrel and stock. The action is electroless nickel plated as stainless wasn't available. I love this gun - have taken about 20 caribou, 2 moose, 4-5 blacktail deer. Its ACCURATE- I think I've had so much "fun" shooting groups that I've eroded the barrel a bit (have close to 2,000 rounds through it now). Back then they made the "fiberthane" stock that I don't think is quite as tough as their current stocks. My stock is foam filled and much quieter than the other old hollow synthetics that were available at the time. My fiberthane may be deteriorating a little from cleaning solvents and HARD use. Over 20 yrs in WET weather banging around in trucks, boats, planes, & snogos and from 70+ to -20 never a problem, I'd say I've gotten my money's worth out of that stock. I found the stock screws loose this fall unaccountably (hard boat ride?) and accuracy was poor until I figured things out. I LOVE the weather resistance - I'm very reluctant to ever go back to wood stocks for Alaskan hunting. Brass lasts forever in this rifle - due to the high quality chamber. And they put a slightly longer than standard throat in it so I can seat my bullets out and get more powder in the case. I've been trying to save for a newer stock but keep finding other toys to distract me.
I'd buy another HS in a heart beat. In fact after having this one I think it would be hard to go back to a factory gun, though I read that some factory guns have come a long way since 1981. My gun was originally ADL style with no floor plate and built in AZ. I decided I preferred the BDL style and had the "new" shop make the alteration. Both shops were great to work with - just wish I'd taken them up on the newer stock as they suggested during the alteration.
