Author Topic: .270 trajectory?? (Read 3730 times)

my cousin has an encore in .270
he shot at a big buck this morning and missed
we ranged the shot and it was 185 yards
we set up a life sized deer target at that range and he shot over it by 3 inches holding bullseye on the target.
we checked his scope and it was hitting deadon at 100 yards
why is this thing rising so at that range?? is that normal?
i thought the .270 shot flatter than that
i got mine out and checked it
i had it set deadon at 25 yards
it hits abt an inch high at 100 thats abt right but at the 185 yard mark it is hitting abt 6 or 7 inches high!!
we were both using factory remington 130 grain psp
so we tried using factory hornady 130 balistic tips and they shot abt 4inches higher than the remingtons
any info on this would be appreciated

This post makes no sense at all. A .270 (or a .30-06 or a .30-30), if sighted in at 100 yards, will shoot in the vicinity of 2-3" low at 185 yards. If the .270 shot like you described it would be a miracle, so there must be another explanation.

* Are you using iron or scope sights?
* Are you shooting over level ground, or uphill/downhill?
* How certain are you of the point of impact? Did you shoot at least three shots and find the center of the group?
* How large were the groups you fired at 185 yards?
* Are you shooting off a hard rest or a soft rest, or no rest?

My guess is that candid answers to the above questions will point out the problem.

i know it dont make sense to me either
it will group around two to three inches at 185 yards
and when we go back to the 100 yard mark it will group under two inches
deadon again so i know it isnt the scope moving
we are shooting slow so i know the barrel cant be heating up
we shot off rests both hard soft and offhand and still get the same results
doesnt make sense

using factory 130s if your sighted in at 25 yards that should make you almost 3" high at 100 and still about 2.5" high at 200 yards. Something very weird is going on here. You guys aren't in th bramuda triangle are you???

a new twist to this mystery
he shot it again today nothing changed same loads same gun same rests
and it hit deadon!!!!
shot it from 25 yards, 2inches low, 50 yards deadcenter, 100 yrds deadcenter, 150 yards one inch low
leaves me scratching my head
it is shooting today like a rifle should
dont know what the heck happened yesterday but i hope it keeps shooting like it did today

That is absolutely whacko! I have shot in the neighborhood of 100 deer with the .270 Winchester and haven't a clue what the heck is going on in your case? I sight mine in to print 1.5" high at 100 yards. With 130 grain ammo this puts me dead on at 200. At 150 I am about 1.4"s high, at 250 about 2.8"s low, at 300 about 7"s low. This is pretty close with all 130 grain .277 bullets. There is no way that the bullet is rising, it goes against the laws of gravity/physics or something. As soon as it leaves the barrel gravity starts pulling it down. The only reason it doesn't hit low at 100 yards is we cant our barrels slightly up thus causing the bullet to cross above the line of sight and then converge back with it at the prescribed sight in distance. Racking my very small brain and offer a couple of wild hair guesses:

1. bullet is being deformed or damaged when bolted causing eratic group when hunting and not from range shooting.
2. your ammo is mismatched or not loaded properly.
3. extreme paralax in your scope
4. your barrel is bent ...no joke here..if its bent you will be able to sight it in for a certain yardage but it will not follow any normal trajectory beyond the point.

Maybe the ammo went bad.

With my blackpowder rifles I had the same thing happen to me. The problem was solved by drying or replacing the powder.

I don't think you said anything about cleaning the barrel or if you did I just missed it.

Most think their Encores, etc. shoot high when shot with a clean barrel. Mine does. It takes 3-5 shots to settle down. With a fouled barrel, it seems to make no difference if it is cold.

Just found myself wondering where in the mix the cleaning was taking place since it can affect the first shots as well as those when it becomes too fouled.

Very Weird! So here is my 2 cents worth. When shooting from the bench was the sand bag and or rest putting an upward pressure on the barrel. Then when you shot it again it was sitting different without toughing the barrel. Has seen this mistake, especially with a floated barrel.
I have also heard tale of a bipod installed making a difference. Pressure and tension can be a bad thing.
