Long or Short Action????
« on: January 28, 2003, 12:12:33 PM »
Hi there. I know this is probably a REALLY stupid question and I feel stupid that I don't know the answer to this because I have been into guns for a while now, but not bolt actions that much.

Anyway, my stupid question is, I have a Winchester Model 70 22-250. How do I know wether it is a long or short action? How do I figure that out?

Someone please let me know:-)

Thank you!

Hi, LaRell!

There is no such thing as a "stupid question".

If your .22-250 is factory orginal, it is a "short action".

Manufacturers designate bolt action lengths by the family of cartridges they are designed for.  The .308 Winchester, .243 Win, .22-50, etc are based on the .308 Win case length of just under 2.0 inch cases.  This also covers the .223 Remington class of cartridges.

The "standard" or Magnum category includes .30-06, .270 Winchester, and the standard belted Magnum series (.300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .338 Win Mag, 458 Magnum, etc) of cases of appx 2.5" length.

There are also "Large Magnum" length actions to hold the very longest and largest of the popular factory cartridges.

To summarize: factory bolt actions differ about 1/2" in length from each family of cartridges to the next.

Quincy is kind of on the Eastern side of the state up North.  About a 2 hour drive from Reno Nevada, and about 3 and a half North east of Sacramento.

Ah, yes!

Quincy.  Is that anywhere near Angels Camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills?

Or is it toward Lassen National Park?  I drove thru there a couple years ago.  LOVELY country!

Yeah it's pretty close to Lassen park.  I just drove past Lake Almanor and saw Mt Lassen yesterday.
