I think I may have a shooter here!
« on: November 28, 2004, 01:08:35 PM »
Hey guys I have been lurking in here for a couple months just reading and trying to learn as much as I could before spending some cash.

I had seen a used encore at a local dealer and liked how it felt but I really didnt want to get the 300 win. Im kinda recoil sensitive.

Anyhows, I went back to the same dealer and worked a trade for a couple of used and abused bolt actions for a new Walnut and Blue with a 24" 270 barrel.

I have plans to set this rifle up for whitetail deer hunting here in Virginia. I am planning on using it when hunting from a climbing treestand, tower stands and ground blinds where my typical shot is anywhere from 20 yards to 275.  I normally wont shoot any further since my eyes arent what they  used to be.

I set it up with maxima bases and rings and a leupold VX 3x9x40. I also shimmed the forend with credit cards that gave me good barrel forearm clearance.

The trigger is kinda heavy but I thought I would try shooting a few groups before I messed with it any.

I borrowed some 130 remington corloks and a handful of 130 federal balistic tips from my son and headed to my hunting club where we have a 100 yard range set up with a shooting table.

It took 5 shots to get the corlokts on a dime size dot at 25 yards.  The leupold scope accuratly walked me right into the bull very easily.

I set up a target at 100 yards and shot 3 slow carefully aimed with plenty of cool down time between rounds.  Measured 7/8 of an inch center to center. I was impressed to say the least. I think with a little range time and load research and development I can do better. I also feel with a little pull weight off the trigger it will be easier to shoot accuratly.

I was getting ready to try the federal premium 130s but a couple of drunks showed up at the range and I put the gun up and went home.

Im real pleased with this new rifle so far and would like to thank all you guys for unknowingly helping me out with my selection and equipment selection.

I would really like to continue to experiment with factory ammo. I got out of handloading years ago and I dont get to shoot as much as I used to. I like the convenience of just buying a couple boxes at a time once I find what the gun likes.

Anyone have any favorite factory ammo that you would recommend for accuracy and performance. I have had good luck in the past with the federal premium 130 bt and siera 130 as well as the 130 corelokt.

Any additional info anyone could provide on factory ammo would be appreciated.  Thanks iisabigone

Itsa,

Sorry I can't help you with the 270 info, never had that caliber.  But I had to chuckle when you said you "borrowed some cartridges from your son".  How are you going to give em back :)  :) .  That is like borrowing someones sandwich    .  I really think you get the best potential for accuracy if you handload.  And it is an awful lot of fun.

longwinters over the years my son has "borrowed" a few shells from me on numerous occasions so I dont really think he is expecting them back but I got a feeling he will need to borrow a shell or two sometime in the future.

Last year he borrowed a g series white muzzleloader and I havent seen it since!   And a couple years before he borrowed my model 70 stainless steel classic with a new Vair X III. He must of forgot where it came from because it was hanging in the gun rack of his truck yesterday aftenoon.

Anyhows I used to do a lot of reloading and really enjoyed it and had great results.  I still have most of my reloading gear stashed in my workshop. However, with my current responsibilities and schedule it is difficult to find the time where I can concentrate on the task at hand.

I'm hoping that with some quality range time and some careful research and development I can squeeze a little more accuracy from the 270 with factory ammo.

I also think a trigger job can help me tighten up the groups a little.

By the way anyone got a few Federal Premium 270 130 btsp I can borrow to try out?

Hey guys I stopped at the range after work and shot a 3 shot group with the federal premium 130 balistic tips in 270. I took my time and squezed each round off with a long cool off period between shots.

3 shot group measured 10/16"   Im pretty pleased with the encore so far!

I still think I can do better with a trigger job but Im just experimenting for now.

So far things are looking good for me and my new toy.

Any of you have any more suggestions for other factory loads I can try.

WHERE IN VA?  SPEND THE MONEY AND TIME GET THE TRIGGER DROPPED TO AROUND 2#.  SOUNDS LIGHT, BUT ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT... YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TO ADJUST TO ANYTHING ELSE.  LOVE MINE AND WISHED I'D DONE IT STRAIGHT AWAY.  I HAVE 243 WIN AND IT SHOOTS GREAT.  BETTER THAN I DO.  GOOD LUCK     MARK
