Decisions...decisions - Barrel Question
« on: November 24, 2004, 11:16:17 PM »
I'd like to get a small varmint barrel for my encore, but am a little concerned about the quality of TC's barrel.

I'am thinking of the 17 Rem or the 22-250, but want to make sure that it will be a shooter.    How do they compare to say a Bullberry, or other maker?   Are there better barrels to be had?

I know that  these are hot little rounds, and tend to wear a barrel down, is this covered under TC's warranty?

By the way, how is the noise level out of these?  I will be shooting in a suburban area, and don't want to draw the unnecessary attention to myself.

Thanks,

I have a 22-250 from T/C, 26 inch SS. Any and all center fire cartridges are going to be a little loud when shot. As far as the quality of the T/C barrel, I have no complaints. I get sub-MOA at 200 yards with my loads I worked up. I am very pleased with my T/C barrel. :D

Don't be concerned with the quality of T/C's barrels - I have two .223s - one SS heavy barrel and one 24" blue.  Both will shoot in the 1/4" range if I do my part.  The warranty of T/C, along with their customer service, can't be beat.

There isn't enough powder in a 22/250 to even think about throat erosion.

I have been very pleased with my 24" 22-250.  It will shoot extremely well with a variety of factory loads.  One of its favorites is also one of the cheapest.  Remington UMC 45gr HP loads go for around $7 a box and will regularly shoot well under MOA.  I did find that heavier bullets tend to do a little better at longer ranges though.  The 52gr Speer HP and the 55gr Nosler BT are great long range performers.  Some times it takes a little tweaking to get the really good accuracy from factory barrels but they are normally pretty darn good.  The only barrel I had that wouldn't shoot well for me was a 25/06 barrel that was extremely picky.

Here is an example of a 3 shot 100 yard group out of my encore 22-250.

I have 2 factory barrels and each will shoot 100 yard 5 shot groups that average 5/8 inch . Each has produced many sub 1/2 inch groups . Its all in careful loading , The custom barrels will clean a little quicker than a new factory barrel and may be little easyer to find that right load but I belive the end result will be just as good with a factory barrel

got to agree witht he bear on this one. the 25-06 i got was also very very picky but he 22-250 is an excellent shooter as is the 223 or the 243 if your wanting a good varmit gun that can also take on a deer then i would say try the 243 and 22-250 if you can and see which you prefer. i am seriously thinking about getting a 243 barrel for the encore mysslf

Of course T/C is not going to cover throat erosion. Does any 22/250 or 220 Swift manufacturer replace the barrel on a bolt gun under warranty when the throat gets to looking like alligator skin? No, of course not.

The 22/250 DOES burn throats, high pressure + high heat + the kind of shooting that varmint guns endure= throat erosion.

If throat erosion is a concern and you can live with the loss of a few hundred fps then buy a 223. Sean
